Here's a virtual movie of the great Walt Whitman reading six of his amazing thought provoking philosophical poems "Laws Imperfect, - Science - Religion -The Thoughts of Man - Hungering - Song of the Answerer" I Perceive Whitmans poems as a rhetorical discussion on the merits and limitations of religion and science as opposed to a broader philosophy of wonderment at the beauty of creation and life. Whitman had a view of the world and the universe and its wonders that placed him outside of the mainstream of the religions of mass indoctrination of Christianity Islam Judaism etc etc his view is one that really harps back to a time when human emotion responded to the forces of the elements not the imposition of a reliance upon artificial idolatry. In Whitman's mind it was enough to acknowledge and enjoy the beauty in our world and be fearful of the forces we cannot control not try to answer the unanswerable with the simplicity of imagined Gods. Whitman's message is that Poetry can be the best philosophy and the the poetic coupling together of great thoughts is a more productive path to finding solace than embracing mythology and enjoying the here and now is more valuable than waiting for an imagined fabled promised land.
