This breeder-only farm is located in the Shire of Loddon and is run by members of the Smith family who also own and operate the Kia-Ora piggery.

When investigators visited Walla piggery, they found a shed of pregnant sows confined in stalls with no room to turn around. In the farrowing sheds they found sows with pressure sores, piglets with their tails docked, several stillborn piglets and others just clinging to life.

In the mating shed, sows were also housed in filthy, crowded group pens where they lay together in their own waste. Sows were also housed in ‘freedom stalls’ similar to group housing, but with open-backed individual stalls.

Investigators also found boars languishing in individual boar stalls. They are kept on the farm so that their semen can be collected by workers to inseminate the sows.
