Loch Scardroy
Memorial Cairn
This monument is part of the Scotland's Rural Past Project, is located close to the Lodge at the head of Loch Scardroy
It is a mortar bonded stone column, circular in plan, it is situated on the crest of a prominent grassy knoll, at the west end of the Loch. It is 2m in height and tapers towards the top where the capping stones are in the form of a mock castellation. Diameter at the top of the column is 1m and at the bottom 1.5m. There are 3 plaques recessed into the E, N and S sides - the largest on the east side is 0.75m x 0.35m and, under a small badge of an armoured arm with a fist clenching a broken lance, there is the inscription “John Fredrick Boyce Combe, CB D??, Major General Colonel, Hussars RS PAO, 12 July 1967”. The smaller plaques are 3.5m square, with the S one having the possible emblem of the Hussars embossed on it and the N one possibly that of the St Johns Cross.
Loch Scardroy (also known as Loch Beannacharain) is a natural loch lying at the top of the River Meig valley approximately 8½ miles beyond Loch Meig. It lies at an elevation of 476 ft (145m) above sea level, is approximately 1.7 miles (2.75 Km) in length and up to 550 yards (500m) in width, and has a total area of 250 acres (101 hectares). The loch reaches depths in excess of 50m, so the best boat fishing is to be expected along the margins and in the shallower bays at both ends of the loch. In addition to wild brown trout Loch Scardroy also contains Arctic char, so there are also ferox trout present.
Scardroy Estate forms part of the extensive Strathconon Estate and extends to nearly 83,000 acres. Situated in central Ross-shire, in the Highlands of Scotland, the estate offers a beautiful and varied terrain from open rolling country to a mountainous landscape. The area includes the Estates Strathconon, Scardroy and Ledgowan.
The estate covers large parts of three deep glacial glens, Meig, Bran and Orrin, which are deep and narrow valleys running west to east. The large proportion of the high ground is over 1000 feet and with the high more than 3000 feet above sea level. Strathconon is the longest glen in Scotland stretching for more than 20 miles.
