August 7, 1999 for the second consecutive day, a player gets his 3,000th hit when Tampa Bay’s Wade Boggs homers in the 6th inning off Indians pitcher Chris Haney. The Devil Rays' 3rd baseman, who is the first player in major league history to reach the milestone with a home run, rounds the bases pointing skyward, blowing a kiss in memory of his mom, and gets down on his knees to kiss home plate. After the game Wade, who’s father Win Boggs was in attendance for the historic moment, said, “I have no idea what made me kneel down and kiss the plate… I was just giving thanks back to the baseball gods.” Boggs played only 10 more games after recording his 3,000th hit, when a knee injury forces him from the lineup. “After all the celebrating was done, he came into the dugout and said: ‘Let’s go win a game,’” said Tampa Bay manager Larry Rothschild, “That’s what you respect about him. Above his work habits and everything else, that desire to win.” However, Cleveland would win the game, 15-10 over the Devil Rays. “Mr. Padre” Tony Gwynn had achieved the 3,000 hit mark just 24 hours earlier
