Since 2015, Juan López and fellow activists in the Tocoa region of northern Honduras have tirelessly defended local rivers and a national park from mining and energy projects. On 14 September 2024, Juan was shot dead in his car by a masked gunman. The alleged shooter and two alleged accomplices have been charged with murder. Their trial is pending. Those who ordered Juan’s murder have not been held accountable.
