The NRC’s Safety Culture Policy Statement and Leadership Model has received widespread international attention. The NRC staff regularly attends international meetings on these topics and participates in the Nuclear Energy Agency’s Working Group on Leadership and Safety Culture (WGLSC). Over the last 2 years, the WGLSC has conducted literature reviews, surveys, and interviews with their member countries’ regulatory bodies and industries to produce two reports on leadership and safety culture: (1) The Mutual Impact of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies and License Holders from a Safety Culture Perspective, which explores how the safety culture of the regulator impacts that of licensees (and vice versa) and identifies good practices and lessons learned, and (2) Leadership for Safety: Practices for Enhancing Leadership for Safety in Nuclear Regulatory Bodies, which identifies effective leadership characteristics, competencies, and behaviors in regulatory bodies with a healthy safety culture. International representatives will offer other perspectives on leadership and safety culture.
