Learning the mechanics of this game is some of the most fun I've had since MK8u's launch back in June 2014... 11 years ago. There's so much depth to this game, small time-saves or losses that I'm still figuring out. Pure bliss when things just start locking in, this game feels so smooth at that point.
Some things to note about this run: Been playing this game since midnight launch (so like, maybe 13 hours ago?). This run will be obsolete by the time I turn my switch 2 back on. Airtime is extremely slow in this game -- boosts save so much time in the air or on the rails. You see me hold my drift longer than I "should" on laps 2 and 3 to take advantage of this. Delayed tricks seem to also benefit from the airspeed penalty. I was chasing ほし from like 2AM through 4AM this morning. Every time I would improve, they would've improved right before I did. Straight out of a SummoningSalt video. But, we persevere. https:// mkwrs.com/mkworld/display.php?track=Acorn+Heights I tried many different combinations. It seems like the lightest weights do the best when there's rails or gliding... I think this guy is the lightest in the game? Wish it were Funky Kong. This kart seems to be all the rage, there may be hidden stats. Chase that meta. Old strats I helped push out of the way: old runs used to use the left rail with 2 coins before glider, used to use the left side rail on laps 2 and 3 as well; I pioneered the right side rail with the instant trick.
I'll be streaming more of this brand new shiny game later on at my twitch @Speed64Demon
Don't worry, I have not forgotten about Maple Treeway, or the 2:12, or the 1:29, or shroomless turnskip... stay tuned[MKW BKS] Maple Treeway (Turn Skip) Lap 1 - 44.082Speed64Demon2025-01-28 | I made the turnskip EVEN faster, and got a lucky triple net.
If I drove a little better in the first half and nailed the recovery from the triple net, this may have had the potential for a 43 lap 1. When I said back in 2020 that a 2:11 is possible -- I saw the future. Now I am the future me, making the future real.
2025 is the year of 2:12.
44.082 / 44.078 / 44.078 = 2:12.238 Lap 1 is now only 0.004s slower than lap 2... Let's get to work.

a 43 lap 1 is definitely possible with a turnskip this clean.
2025 is the year of 2:12. With this BKS improvement, we now have objective evidence that a turn skip run can beat the very first glitch run set on MT: Troy's 2:12.283 44.121 / 44.078 / 44.078 = 2:12.277 Let's get to work.

This run is strong for me. Consistent, no awful mistakes or glaring issues.
To point out a few negatives, though, include: lap 1 Jak strat, wheelie turn in Wiggler section (+0.50s) full drop with no air (+0.150s at least); lap 2 mushroom was early and shortcut was wide/sloppy, double net due to sub-optimal pace; lap 3 shortcut airtime due to playing it safe, forced wheelie turn in hut, wide line exiting Wiggler section.
A focus on the positives: slip drift before u-turn lap 1, 3/3 fast u-turns (not quite TAS-like but RTA fast), incredible entrances to Wiggler sections lap 2 and 3, godlike Jak strat lap 3, and 3/3 smooth landings after final trick.
I went for the down trick lap 3 for style, and it likely cost me the small fraction of time to not tie the run. Worth it.
I've been focusing on consistency with recent attempts. I was not satisfied at all with my previous run, it was only WR due to the use of the clip glitch. This category has a few main focus points each lap. In order of time save: clip, fast entry, low cannon, triple net. Clip saves around 1.5-1.8 seconds a lap (using BKS as a benchmark), fast entry can save 1-2 seconds a lap compared to landing at 0 kmh (after hitting hut/roof), low cannon saves around 0.3 seconds a lap, and triple net usually saves around 0.2 seconds a lap. Adding this up... we have a way to go. Sub 1:30 is short term goal, long term is sub 1:27.
Very happy with my driving this run. Lap 3 cannon had me sweating... I had just failed a run to the lap 3 bump at a similar pace maybe 5 minutes prior to this. We will persevere.

Almost 3 years later.... we are so back. I set this run with my cat, Luna, sitting on my lap. Cat% WR eZ
Very standard run. Don't mind me changing standards.
Starting with a clip lap 1 would have caused unshakeable nerves 2 years ago. Now, it doesn't phase me. I got a slow slip instead of spindrift on the following turn, losing considerable time. The other two main time losses are the terrible and slow entries between laps. Between these 3 items, there's at least 2 seconds of time to be saved.
Lap 3 is BKS for Benny strat. Des does the actual turn in the Benny faster (both to get the wheelie under the track + adjustment lines), but I made up for that in the driving, with a low cannon, and brave wheelie on final branch. I think a mid-27 is as low as Benny can go, and a low 26 is possible for the clip glitch.
While it's possible to beat this run without using any clip glitches, I would rather push MT glitch into the new, inescapable future that involves a clip glitch in every run. Work our way towards a 3/3 clip. First, sub-1:30. Then, ultimate end goal of 1:26.x with 3/3 clip, 3/3 low cannon, and 2/2 fast entries. Then, world domination.

Watch in 4K60!! Third time's the charm for these 3/3 runs :) We almost pulled an agent 112 youtube.com/watch?v=oYmqJl4MoNI but either way, massive run.
I chose this Mii because I thought it would be incredible if I hit a 2:14.000 with it or even a 2:13.000, but I'm more than happy with this result.
We may have not skipped 2:13 entirely, but we are now only 0.127 away from 2:12. We are within 1 second of Troy's first glitch time of 2:12.282. It's happening.
Now that I finally hit the 2:13, and it was a MASSIVE cut into 2:13, I'm going straight after the 2:12. It's too close and I'm too hot to stop this momentum, so I'm moving the goal posts (after stretching). In the future, I hope to take back the no-turn-skip BKT from Victor (go watch it here btw: youtube.com/watch?v=LZVSZf6T78s) but my sights are largely on 2:12 for now. I'm incredibly impressed and happy with my driving throughout this entire run. The weak points are as follows: Lap 1 - bad line turn skip recovery with wheelie turns and drop wheelie, bad line on final ramp lost about 0.2 to these combined; Lap 2 - clean, could have taken corner before wiggler entrance tighter, turn skip could have been quicker (lots of airtime on detach), and I did not get the Totom-optimal triple net; Lap 3 - Jak strat could have been quicker, corner before wiggler section could have been tighter... net entry got QM'd due to bad inputs (released my drift too early causing me to get airtime so the game ate 2 wheelie inputs -- start of wheelie was delayed, causing a poor line into net entry) so I was only able to salvage a double net with large airtime. This poor net entry prevented the triple net and thus 2:12, confirmed by Dolphin.

One day, I swear, one day I will drive well and hit turn skips as clean as these. The journey towards 2:12 may come faster than anticipated, since this run proves all it takes is one day where I drive well. I've been playing no-turn-skip more off-stream and it has considerably improved my consistency, so I am full steam ahead towards reclaiming everything Treeway.
My goals haven't changed with this improvement since it's still a 2:14, so here's what I said last time: I hope to take back the no-turn-skip BKT from Victor (go watch it here btw: youtube.com/watch?v=LZVSZf6T78s) but my sights are largely on 2:13 for now. I started off again with a strong lap 1, however the final ramp was weak and lost a good 0.100s due to airtime and nosebad. The lap 1 turn skip was okay, with a frame 3-4 first hop and probably frame 1-2 second hop. Lap 2 turn skip was bad, with a frame 4 hop. I think if I hopped any later and I wouldn't have been able to salvage a drift. Lap 3 turn skip was the magnum opus of the run, with a frame 1 perfect hop and thus optimal momentum, perfectly demonstrated by comparing to the ghost. The Jak strats lap 2 and 3 lost about 1 second in time (arguably 0.8-0.9s), combined with the failed final ramp lap 3 and 3/3 bad landings, this is a 2:12 fail. I very well could jump straight over 2:13 into 2:12. It is no longer possible, objectively, to beat this run with just one turn skip. You must use at least two. Overall this run was driven magnificently everywhere else, only held back by my egregious mistakes noted above.

This mii name is also from my 2010 Homebrew era. I think I just Google translated Yoshi. Idk, Yoshi Story N64 was a good game.
So I made sure to miss a mini-turbo on lap 3 for the suspense and branding. It took almost 6 years to go from turn skip being implemented to finally completing a 3/3 run. Back in 2016, I don't think I really saw myself pushing for a 3/3 run, not because I didn't want to, but because it felt insurmountable. As I continued to play between 2016-2018 I felt myself giving into despair and spent some time away from the grind to focus on school. But in early 2020, after a long enough hiatus, I wanted to return and complete my goal for 3/3 and achieve a record that will stand for years. This is, of course, not that run. It is a laughable entry in this path towards the 2:12. I still hold onto the endgame goal of 2:12.283 or better, regardless of how impossible this may seem today.
My goals haven't changed with this improvement since it's still a 2:14, so here's what I said last time: I hope to take back the no-turn-skip BKT from Victor (go watch it here btw: youtube.com/watch?v=LZVSZf6T78s) but my sights are solely on 2:13 for now. Lap 1 was a beautiful start to a potential run. The turn skip recovery could have been better with a better timed hop, but at this point all that matters is that I get enough momentum to get a drift + miniturbo 3 times. I even thought it was 2:12 material (see VOD above). The run essentially just kept getting worse from there, though. Terrible Jak strat lap 2, unacceptable Wiggler entrance lap 2 (lost like 0.5s), clutch turn skip lap 2, decent recovery, decent salvage triple net, slight bounce on final ramp landing. Lap 3 makes me laugh, I definitely did the taunt to death true combo (see VOD above). I was slightly too slow for a triple net with a questionable line + my bad alignment/air after the second trick... whether it was nerves or QM I had a bounce upon landing which ruined any chance of a good line on final ramp and my only goal was to not fall off. Terrible bounce on the final landing as well, as a cherry on top. I think lap 3 turn skip was a textbook "average" turn skip, since each hop was roughly on frame 3 rather than frame 1, meaning momentum was conserved but it was not optimal. I threw away the 2:13 but that just means the next run will have an even larger cut. Right? Theoretically an extremely well-driven 1/3 run (cue laugh track) can still beat this run.

I traded my missed miniturbo for a missed trick this run. That alone did not cost the 2:13, however it contributed heavily towards it. I believe with a solid 3/3 average turn skips, I could jump straight to a low 2:13 or even 2:12 with excellent driving. The driving of this run was quite good, except for a few places. Specifically, this is super uncommon, but I stuck to the ground 3/3 laps after the first corner, making my corner before cannons very rough. Jak strat lap 2 was not good, and my corner before the wiggler section was very wide with a bad line upon entry too. Lap 1 turn skip was VERY high, but had a strong recovery. Lap 2 turn skip missed frame perfect hops, cutting my momentum but solid regardless. Lap 3 turn skip was excellent, although slightly high so not perfect. Lap 3 makes me very happy, but shows that a 43 split is completely doable and should happen before the end of the year. Current BKS as of this upload is a 44.113 by myself. I didn't miss any miniturbos this run... however I messed up the triple net lap 2. It hurt, and if you look closely you can see I was only 1-2 frames late on my left trick input!! That cost around 0.2s.

The 42 has finally happened, and with a huge sub!! My only complaints would be for a slightly faster SC, using only one hop to recover to give a more ideal line from turn skip with optimal mini-turbo release, no wheelie turns, and also a triple net. Everything else went just about perfectly!
Going for lap 2 flaps with a category that's largely QM really sucks your time away, so I'm very thankful my first 42 was a large cut into 42. I see this going down to a 42.5 or 42.4 if I or anyone really wants to push it. Getting a turn skip as optimal as I got in this flap doesn't happen often, and was probably my first one since my last flap of 43.0 lol

I couldn't tell you how much doing the Troy Strat lap 2 cost me. I couldn't tell you how much I saved lap 3. All I know is that it's June 4th and my name is Speed64Demon. Compared to my run from a week ago, this is truly something special.
For the first time in over 7 years, I temporarily do not have a capture card that's able to record anything to my computer. My Avermedia Live Gamer Portable was discontinued and no longer gets support from Avermedia, so when the new Windows update (version 2004) rolled out, it broke the drivers for it. tl;dr this run was set off-stream, before I could get my new capture card in this upcoming Monday. There is beautiful irony to this run with that fact. It also has just about everything I could ask for in a glitch PB as well: that epic tight line before cannon lap 1, the failed triple net, fast entry, camera blind lap 2 Benny, Troy strat lap 2, big triple net, epic clip glitch, epic low cannon, epic final wheelie on final ramp. I dropped my wheelie because it would have otherwise dragged me off the side and I would've lost this run. I don't think there could've been a better run to compare this run to than des's former WR, as it perfectly illustrates both the time loss lap 2 and the time gain lap 3. I had about 4-5 no-lap-count runs where I went too far right with my Benny strat that finished around the 1:37.5-1:38.5 range, and are available on chadsoft for comparison videos.
I'm just so happy guys. I've been playing this track just about every single day for the past month whenever possible. I'm currently on my APPEs, or my clinical rotations, as I wrap up my final year of pharmacy school. Between the 40 hours on rotation and the few shifts I can pick up at work each week, on top of maintaining a relationship and friendships, making time for MT has been hugely sacrificial. I knew it would pay off and I knew I could reach far into my potential. I just had no idea it would happen this quickly!! I'm torn if I should continue or go back to turn skips for the 2:12. I'm not done with glitch just yet as a sub-1:30 is calling my name (joking), but I am more than satisfied with my latest push. Either way I have determination in my heart.
A little less than 3 years ago, I was beaten by Justin using the clip glitch. I played the new category begrudgingly, and had a couple close calls with the high clip glitch. I put into my description of the 1:57 1/3 BKT, "onto the next thing: clipping trees." Little did I know I would be the first to use one in an entirely new glitch category on MT with the Benny strat. I had not even hit a proper clip glitch until maybe 1-2 months ago on stream, neither RTA nor with Dolphin!! This track has grown and changed throughout the years and I am so very thankful and happy to have been along for the ride, and able to continue to compete almost 9 years later. Thank you all for reading all this, and thank you all for the continued support and for the support on stream :) Seriously, some of those small pieces of advice as I learned this strategy starting back in March were monumental to my success today. Thank you all so much.

Overall driving was solid. The bounce lap 1, wide line after Jak strat lap 2, and the re-alignment lap 3 all lost a bit of time. But, shroomless turnskip is still a thing, so this category is still roughly 3 seconds away from its limit (2:15). I don't think this category is very high priority for me, but I was practicing some u-turns and Jak strats and hit quite a few 45 splits lap 2 and felt motivated! While I had hoped my previous run would not last a full year, it did. While the rest of this game has advanced to levels never before seen with glitches on RR, KC, rBC, and others, MT turn skip continues to be a meme factory of errors. The big bounce lap 1, the wall clip lap 2 (didn't cost THAT much, just caused big air), and the missed miniturbo lap 3 (my signature move) + a few other minor errors most definitely cost the 2:13 in this run. Overall, the run had incredible driving that was held back by those rather significant errors! I think I've adjusted my sights while not becoming complacent by aiming for a solid 2:12. This run had an INCREDIBLE pace. Had I been a little faster lap 2 (not messed up the shortcut, maybe a better u-turn) I would have nailed the triple net -- a full second ahead of Totom's 2:16.884. For lap 3... it was going so good. SO good. Then I had a terrible u-turn (it was wide) and drop wheelie (but we got air) and then to make matters sting just a bit more, only double net. Had I hit the chain and triple net, we would've seen a 45.0 (with good u-turn it would've been 44.9) and finished with a mid 2:15!! Huge shame about the bad landing on the final trick lap 3. It wouldn't be an HD Demon certified run without it LMAO. I'm tempted to do a "What could have been" style video where I go in and optimize the u-turn forward to see what I could have gotten on Dolphin. I've had my eyes on 2:14 ever since I figured out I could use the turn skip in a 3lap run. This is almost 4 years in the making, and just over a month in the making for my stream. I am so unbelievably happy with how quickly I picked this category back up and how quickly I've progressed. This is just the beginning for turn skip, we still have our eyes on a 2:13 and even a 2:12 long-term. We must beat Troy's 2:12.283 without using the glitch. I am forever grateful for all my viewers on my streams for these attempts, thank you to everyone who stops by. Some notes about the run: had a bad line entering cannon lap 1. got big air on the Wiggler entrance. turn skip was beautiful but had that harsh wheelie turn, triple net was sloppy but better than a double net! lap 2 I had a rough line after the first corner after cannon, losing some time. great Wiggler entrance. beautiful turn skip, salvaged by two frame-perfect hops to keep that horizontal momentum. unfortunately only a double net. lap 3 was honestly driven perfectly amazing until the missed chain after a beautiful u-turn. I then only got double net and had to adjust my wheelie on the final ramp. I probably lost around 0.500 to those 3 things combined, and such is life on MT. Wouldn't want it any other way.
I put my live audio over the comparison between my .571, .533, and a .479 I set after my 2:14 run.

I'll be honest, I barely remembered this run until I re-watched it a few times. Lap 1 looks sloppy, but I got an amazing turn skip, of the top tier. I only needed to hop once, so I lost time by doing two and causing the miniturbo to take longer to charge. Laps 2 and 3 were both amazing besides the u-turns and the Kezer drop lap 3 (at least I got air on the bridge). Seems like it would be easier to just skip that turn right??

I am unbelievably happy with my session on Friday. Ended with two World Record runs within an hour and a half of each other both live on stream. While they may not have been large cuts in milliseconds, they were monumental for my continued efforts towards a 2:14 on this track. I won't stop until I get there, and plan to stream every attempt until it is so.
I try to stream at least weekly, mostly on Saturdays, at my twitch: twitch.tv/speed64demon
Overall my critiques with this run: of course, the missed mini-turbo lap 1. Lap 1 turn skip was high, making it about a net even with normal SC. Triple net was solid. Lap 2 wiggler entrance was a wide angle, turn skip was great (not enough horizontal momentum as I'd like), and missing the triple net kinda stung. Lap 3 went beautifully and could have likely been a 44.x without my wheelie adjustment on the final ramp.

I can't help that I work best with clutch catch-up lap 3s. This is my brand. I also seem to be really consistent with beating Kisaragi by very small fractions of a second. It's gotta be frustrating.
Some obvious flaws in this run: no stick SCs 3/3 bad TAS Jak lap 2 bad u-turn lap 1 and 3
I set the run you're watching now at like 2:40am. It was the first time I began actually hitting the chain wheelies during that session. The ghosts I chose to compare are a 2:16.075 and 2:16.083 I set days prior to this. The 2:16.075 run was an easy 2:15 I choked because the dpad on my GCN controller is fickle and I had a delayed wheelie into the lap 3 net entrance. That or I suck at lines when it matters most. The 2:16.083 run has 0/3 chains and 2/2 drops with a Zenel strat lap 1 (I think). Another 2:15 robbed by the wheelie button. Or, of course, I don't have the rhythm.
I will continue to push the NTS category until I feel like I cannot improve further. I really need to work on my u-turn and nets - this will unlock mid 2:15 runs for me, possibly even beating my current 2:15.639 turn skip run (which is insanely weak for a turn skip) if I don't salvage another improvement there before then. I hope to push turn skip to 2:14 by the end of the summer.

This is the fastest pace I have ever had entering lap 3 on this track, ever. Lap 2 could have easily been a 44.7 or 44.8 with better SC and no bounce at the end. It's amazing what happens when I hit the chain wheelies.
I was racing my 2:15.793 ghost to get a better idea of the net pacing for 2:15 net, and unfortunately I choked the triple net lap 3 and failed to salvage the run. I didn't realize I was still ahead of Kisaragi so I threw the run away after failing triple net for the middle branch strat because I had no idea my lead was still that strong.
The other two ghosts were Kisaragi's 2:16.073 and my recent 2:16.237 run (which was just absolutely average in every regard).

I typically avoid going for the turn skip lap 1 if I already did the SC because the net pacing is usually unfavorable, but I was TTing for the no-turn-skip category and got a little bored. I turned in my wheelie hard lap 2 because I forgot about the wiggler positions (if you look closely you can even see me turn to the right before realizing my mistake). This cost me probably .2 to .3, hence the 45.5 lap. Lap 3 was gorgeous. I hit a full drop wheelie and thankfully got air on the bridge. I had a slightly slow u-turn and the first 2 corners were a little scuffy, along with missing the double-hop on the triple net. Given there are only 3 things I'm complaining about on a lap of Maple Treeway, the lap was gorgeous.

Solid, but very improvable. I missed triple net both lap 2 and 3 because I couldn't time my hops for the life of me, this was probably my third or fourth run where I hit the turn skip with a solid 44.4 to 44.7 lap 1, and I wasn't about to lose yet another one to either the u-turn or net. So, I played it safe and didn't improve by as much as I had hoped. It doesn't help to hit 2 full drop wheelies either.
I finally started Thanksgiving break today (I set the run yesterday), and I think I've set a WR during my Thanksgiving break maybe 3 times over the past 5 years (the day after Thanksgiving in 2013 - 1:58.833 MT, the Sunday before Thanksgiving in 2016 - 2:16.330 MT, and now 2017 with 2:15.793 MT, the week before Thanksgiving). Clearly, the thought of turkey does wonders.
I'm still aiming for more, I want 2:14 (and 2:13, and 2:12 even lol) so I'll eventually and gradually (and I mean gradually) try to go for 2/3 and 3/3 turn skip. Even now, I only hit a "usable" turn skip (meaning I can land and convert into a miniturbo with a good line) maybe 10% of the time I even aim for a turn skip, and that's a generous guestimate, so it's still impractical to throw away a good 1/3 run.
Also, the reason my speedometer is a little... weird, is because my disc drive for my wii has died (the laser is dead, cleaning did little to help), so since my riivolution workaround does not work with ISO, I simply used the blue sky as a "chroma-key" background, but clouds and leaves still appear, but I thought it worked well enough. I don't even know where to begin, I've probably had the goal of 2:15 ever since I got no-glitch WR back in May of 2013. For this run, I had just gotten home from classes and had around 2 hours of spare time before I had to go to work - so of course I played as much MT as I could in that short time.
First, I hit this within 15 minutes (image.prntscr.com/image/g1cPt4LWT4Oa1FzF2B4mpg.png), where I was over .3 ahead of my old WR entering lap 3. I was pissed, but I persisted. About 30 minutes later, I hit this (image.prntscr.com/image/2G2se2uuSE6XOOWuQvu14A.png), a very solid run with no turn skip - but I was tied with my old WR at the time of the chain wheelie on lap 3 before the net ... where I hit a full drop with no air on bridge, the run was over but I was hoping I could take no-turn-skip BKT. Roughly 30 minutes after that, and my hands stopped violently shaking, I achieved the time you are viewing right now.
I saw 2:15 and felt so relieved, I saw 945 and lost my shit.
If anybody remembers my streams, I literally put my goal as 2:15.945 for a long while before switching to 2:15.683 (to pay respect to NMeade's 2:17.683). I wish I could stream more, but my internet provider can now only offer an upload speed that's just barely not strong enough to sustain a quality stream (I can't even do 240p at 30fps). Instead, I began recording every single one of my sessions - and I'm so glad I did because I captured this run live against my old WR.
But anyway, I want to push as far as I possibly can, as BKS still gives me a 2:14 or lower with just one turn skip. This is far from optimized, but I can rest easy knowing I accomplished one of my three long-term goals for MKW.
I will upload the raw version of this run sometime tonight just in case the music copyright laws ban the video from public viewing in some countries.
