GoldenEye 007(Xbox Series X) Pt 4: Surface - 00 Agent
updated
43:19 I'm not sure I've ever seen a Cave Man riding a Turkey in Sunken City...
1:16:34 first heart attack
1:30:56 second heart attack. I thought I didn't break the orb from earlier.
2:40:22 I was actually very calm during this.
I was trusting the kindness of this game that it would forgive me. I would have deserved to lose the Ankh there.
3:03:53 this would have been a heart attack, but I thought about the possibility and that's why I jumped down little earlier.
3:35:33 now this one was probably the worst heart attack.
For some reason I had a very brief moment of not focusing at all on what I was doing. And then quickly realizing what I was doing.
Because of that I took a short break at the beginning of the next level.
3:36:45 this exit was scary. recently had a run end on similiar exit. they kept shooting me in sync so I would stay stun locked until they knocked me into the Celestial Jelly.
3:37:29 which was followed by another heartattack.
3:49:01 second to last level just being Temple also gave me a heart attack.
3:44:02 one of those heart attacks again. could have lead to an unescapable loop.
Few days earlier I died in 7-98. I was 2 orbs and exit away from victory.

I'm so happy this didn't take multiple weeks after that run. I knew this would happen eventually if I just kept playing.
This was my second run of the day. I was super close to stop after the first one. But chose to give it one more go.
Best video game desicion I've ever made.
Finally... from now on when I play Spelunky 2. I can also go Jungle route if I want.
No more need to always try to give myself the best chances. Freedom!!!
I managed to keep the Ankh until the end. But I feel like about half of the times I lost the Ankh previously in Cosmic Ocean I also died permanently in the same level. Often because I lost Vlad's Cape by getting crushed or something else that's fun.
I wouldn't recommend this challenge to anyone.
The game itself is AMAZING! And Cosmic Ocean is actually so much fun to play. Even after all this time.
But do yourself a favor and treat Cosmic Ocean as en endless mode where you are just happy to get a new record.
That's how I did it for a while. And it always felt great. Almost never disappointing.
Of course I'm glad now that I went for it! But everyday I kept questioning how long can I keep trying.
And if I would give up. Then all the hours of trying would have been for nothing. It was stressful even when I wasn't playing.
It takes so much time and there's no guarantee it ever happens.
My previous best runs:
7-98 (normal run)
7-91 (normal run)
7-83 (normal run)
7-81 (normal run)
7-71 (normal run)
7-70 (normal run) x3
7-66 (daily challenge)
7-65 (normal run) x2
7-61 (normal run)
7-59 (normal run) x2
Lost a lot of good spelunkers in there...
I can record 1 hour max at once. So this run had 6 separate recordings combined.
I took a few minute break and switched the recording to a new one at the end of Olmec's Lair, beginning of 7-18, 7-44, 7-91.
Also started a new recording between levels 7-68 and 7-69 without a real break.
For this video I cut those breaks into seconds.
0:00 Hub/1-1 Dwelling
6:42 2-1 Volcana
15:32 3-1 Olmec's Lair
19:15 4-1 Tide Pool
28:14 4-4 Abzu
30:14 5-1 Ice Caves
32:37 6-1 Neo Babylon
37:35 6-4 Tiamat's Throne
38:38 7-1 Sunken City
44:29 7-4 Hundun's Hideaway
46:34 7-5 Cosmic Ocean
56:20 7-10 Cosmic Ocean
1:13:20 7-20 Cosmic Ocean
1:34:09 7-30 Cosmic Ocean

I have no excuse for how I died 3:24:43. The danger was so obvious.
Also the way I lost the ankh 53:49 shouldn't happen anymore. Easy jump done very carelessly. The ankh could have saved the run at the end.
I really want to have this done so I can finally play this any way I want.
And not always go for the best chances. Which for me means I never see Jungle, because I need Vlad's Cape.
Update:
Luckily I did get to 7-99 few days later.
youtu.be/GI1POYg_cI8
So this run doesn't feel that bad anymore. I feared it would take weeks before getting anywhere near this far again.
Also I actually do have an excuse for how I died in this 7-98 video. My mind was all over the place. I was tired, super nervous, relieved(because I thought I had it) and I kept trying to tell myself that this is a level like every other one. But no... I kept trying to push through because I was not thinking clearly. There was a very similar situation earlier in the run in which I did what I should have done here... Use a rope, get high enough for the spark traps to not be active and get to the other side. So easy. Of course I never found out where the last orb was so who knows. It could have still been bad.
My previous records:
7-91 (normal run)
7-81 (normal run)
7-70 (normal run) x3
7-66 (daily challenge)
7-65 (normal run) x2
7-59 (normal run) x2
Played on Xbox Series X version.
Kapala and Vlad's Cape are my only must have items for a proper attempt. Everything else can still be found in crates.
Climbing gloves is the only one I absolutely don't want. They can help me 1000 times in a run, but they only need to screw me once. I never took the time to get used to Spelunky 2 Climbing Gloves.
1:08:03 I wish I could say that was intentional. I only tried to place the bomb on the ground.
My previous records:
7-81 (normal run)
7-70 (normal run) x3
7-66 (daily challenge)
7-65 (normal run) x2
7-59 (normal run) x2
Played on Xbox Series X version.
The real run ending mistake happened in 7-69 (2:40:48). After losing Vlad's cape my only chance would have been finding normal cape or jetpack in a crate. Which is VERY unlikely to happen when you need it the most.
That was 100% on me. Looking at the footage I can't believe I kept going up like that in Volcana without looking up first.
My records:
7-91 (normail run)
7-81 (normal run)
7-70 (normal run) x3
7-66 (daily challenge)
7-65 (normal run)
7-59 (normal run)
Played on Xbox Series X version.
Changes during the pauses at the start of 7-5, 7-30 and 7-58.
Unfortunately the second recording had annoying audio issues between 55:40 and 1:39:15.
Because of that. In a way I'm now glad this wasn't my 7-99 run.
I started playing this game again about 2 weeks ago.
Mainly 0-2 runs per day. Usually just a daily challenge.
I still felt very rusty last week.
But now I managed to get a new record again.
Little dissapointed because I've never been this confident for 7-99. Only had 18 levels left to do.
But overall it's always nice to get a new record. I just hope the next one isn't 7-82.
2:07:06 this is the luck I would have needed at the end as well.
My previous records:
7-70 (normal run) x3
7-66 (daily challenge)
7-65 (normal run)
7-59 (normal run)
Played on Xbox Series X version.
I uploaded the video, but forgot to set it public.
My current records:
7-81 (normal run)
7-70 (normal run)
7-66 (daily challenge)
Played on Xbox Series X version.
I mainly only use my own tactics. Some levels I will take noticeably slower than others.
I haven't even seen an actual 100% speedrun, but I know there's bunch of glitches and exploits you could use.
I'm not trying to properly learn to speedrun this game. I'd hate to get sick of a game I love as much as this.
Just tried this for fun. For now I think I'm finally done.
This was my 7th attempt at a full 100% run(3rd with 0 failed missions). The first two were about 1h 56min each. After those each were a little faster than the previous run.
I don't expect anyone to actually watch these, but I did upload every run. Because after each run I didn't think I'd get a better one.
So here's a week worth runs:
#1 youtu.be/xgWtaFmSgTU
#2 youtu.be/1Gk_nu5szxQ
-This would have been an improvement over the first, but I messed up thinking Objective A was completed in Caverns. Only realized it near the end. That was bad... But worst mistake was thinking I would be able to go back for it and still finish the level in time to unlock the cheat. Lost about 10 minutes because of that.
#3 youtu.be/4DzinVitd60
-This was the first I was going to publish thinking I wouldn't get a better one. That's why it has all the timestamps/chapters.
#4 youtu.be/71nvPMKeNKg
#5 youtu.be/szSam9WQnBI
-This was the first I managed to do without a single mission fail. In runs after this I wouldn't accept fails anymore. Not even a quick restart after a mistake in beginning of a mission.
#6 youtu.be/GEuRFlSOguM
-I was going to be done after this one, but the last 15-ish minutes has really annoying audio issues(recording issues, not emulation). So I did it one more time. And managed to improve about 2 more minutes.
At the very beginnning you can see that Facility is already unlocked.
That's because I decided to not delete the save file every time Dr. Doak was in wrong location.
Because deleting the save is very inconvenient.
-Exit the emulator
-Start another app which connects pc to xbox
-Locate/delete the save file
-Restart emulator
-Restart goldeneye(which took about 1 minute in the previous version of Xenia. Now it's about 10-15 seconds)
-Change in-game settings(widescreen and control stuff)...
I did do this everytime until the last day. And even then only up to Facility.
But it doesn't matter anyway, because Dam plays exactly the same whether it's already completed or not.
This version is the 2007-2008 cancelled unfinished remaster for Xbox 360. It leaked online 2021.
It can be played through modded Xbox 360(real hardware, no emulation) or Xenia emulator on PC/Xbox Series consoles.
Rom can be found online. Can't provide a link for that. But once you have it I'd recommend patching it with http://n64vault.com/ge-xbla-tools:community-edition-updater.
It fixes a lot of grapgical issues and improves the game.
There are still some missing/old/glitching textures. Jungle has invisible walls instead of a fence similiar to Surface levels. Menu music is gone once you go back, no pause/elevator music, no X-tracks.
This is still easily my favorite way to play GoldenEye 007. It just feels so good.
Things I miss from the official Xbox release are single button for previous weapon, rebindable buttons and "Aim Lock".
Slower 100% Playthrough:
youtu.be/vFDDRTmffpg
Also done in one go, but speed wasn't the goal. Except obviously with the cheat unlocks.
Includes a lot of graphic comparisons.

My first "no damage" walkthrough of GoldenEye 007(Xbox Series X) on 00 Agent difficulty.
My almost 13 years old walkthrough was the original version played on actual Nintendo 64.
And my recordings probably made the quality even worse.
This version can't be bought separately.
You either need XBOX Game Pass subscription.
Or own a digital copy of Rare Replay. Which comes with 30 other games including Perfect Dark(XBLA)!
Nintendo Switch also has a different version available on their Nintendo Online service.
Also not available to be purchased separately.
My thoughts about this version at the moment:
I am very happy to see GoldenEye officially released after 25 years!
But also dissapointed for what it could/should have been.
First dissapointment came when it was announced and it wasn't the finished version of the amazing XBLA remaster.
Second dissapointment was when I first played it couple days ago and realized it's only 30fps.
But when you compare this to the original N64 version on original hardware. The MUCH more stable 30fps is still a HUGE improvement.
There are some quality of life improvements(mainly in controls) that make a big difference depending on what you're looking for.
-Modern controls
-Button mapping
-Own separate buttons for Reload(for example now you can now reload while facing a door), Action, Previous Weapon and Crouch.
-Sight lock. Allows you to move while holding the aim button. Which brings the crosshair to the screen. And some weapons zoom in. Also if you want the old style this option can be turned off.
I 100% the game and got all the achievements in less than 8 hours. Before I decided to record this.
At the moment I think this is easily the best official release to play. But that's because there's not much competition.
My overall favorite way is easily the leaked XBLA version played on modded XBox 360. It's so smooth and feels so good to play. The visuals are amazing as well.
It also has one big gameplay improvement any other versions don't. And that's swapping mission items by a press of a button without having to go to the pause menu.
Maybe one day it'll be finished and released. But I'm not holding my hopes up for that.
The fact that GoldenEye was rereleased at all was a miracle. I'll always be dissapointed knowing what it could have been. But I am super happy to see this at all!
The game runs 30fps, but I couldn't find a setting to not record 60fps. That's why the video is 60fps unfortunately.

Like the opposite room from where I found him, the lab area(4:09) or the area behind that door(3:23). I always check that one last, because there's no other reason to go there.
Remote Mines can be quick detonated(1:54) in this version by pressing Action + Next Weapon buttons at the same time.
As soon as Objective C is completed (4:59) you can blow up the gas tanks and exit the level to complete it.
Just make sure 006 is not too close to the tanks. He'll walk to you so lure him away.
I just wanted to show what happens after.
I re-recorded multiple videos, because I decided to upgrade this walkthrough to "no damage".

My new walkthrough and first "no damage" walkthrough of GoldenEye 007(Xbox Series X) on 00 Agent difficulty.
GoldenEye 007 played and recorded on Xbox Series X.
Here's the original video: youtube.com/watch?v=_yzwCx2kzqQ
In this level the original also was "no damage".
The reasons I also decided to re-record Dam was:
It was the only video where I recorded the level intro once. Then I played the level by skipping the intro. And combined the two clips. And the result wasn't great.
Also I just wanted to do better. In the earlier levels I seemed to accept worse play. And got a little "pickier" towards the later levels.

GoldenEye 007 played and recorded on Xbox Series X.
Only the bonus at the end where I play with cheats was re-recorded. Because I realized you could also switch graphics in pause menu. So I wanted to do it again.
Also I was able to record only 1 hour at once. So I cut the recording and started a new one during menus few times. Should be unnoticeable.
First attempt from a day earlier: youtu.be/cK8ahs1CuOg
Gameplay is fine, but most level intros and outros failed to record properly.
I decided to do this kind of all in one go and in one video for now.
Because I've wanted to do GoldenEye XBLA for so long. But haven't been able to record with 60fps from my modded Xbox 360. And my pc is not good enough.
Now the Xenia emulator is on Xbox Series consoles. And it plays amazingly well.
But... There's still minor problems that might not be there near future like those graphical glitches with enemy bodies disappearing(example at 9:20). That doesn't happen on PC and obviously not on real hardware(Xbox 360).
And for now it has to be 1080p, but on PC you can get 4K. So maybe it'll be even better in future.
I'll put recording individual videos for each level on hold, because of that. And the fact that I just got done doing that for the official release of GoldenEye 007 for Xbox Series X.
But I really want to do this as well at some point.
I toggle to original graphics here and there to show the difference. If/when I do the individual videos I will only use the new graphics.
This playthrough was done with the Commynity Edition patch. Except Jungle level.
For Jungle I prefer how it looked before. Also I used the unused Jungle song for the 00 Agent(1:13:24).
For the Jungle cheat unlock I played the Community Edition version and no music(2:21:50).

If you shoot just a little longer you would lure a third guard. I did it better on the cheat unlock video.
In cases like 0:50, 2:30 and 3:17. Instead of a single tap I fire little longer on purpose. To lure other guards to take them out easier.
At 5:41 is a good time to throw a grenade at Jaws if you have any. He takes damage, but won't get triggered.
So you can easily still shoot him in the head from behind.
Aim the grenade more down that directly at Jaws so it won't go too far.

Guards without hats go for Natalia. Prioritize these ones.
3:57 When you hear glass break. Go for them immediately. They'll shoot Natalia and she'll die very fast.
If you're unlucky both sides can break almost at the same time. Making it almost impossible to not fail. You could try to shoot the other one while using your body to block the shots from the other.
Also once the glass is broken. You won't hear the next ones until they already shoot.

To be able to strafe run properly. You need to map movement to d-pad. It doesn't work at all on analog stick.
Good thing is you can have both mapped at the same time. So when you don't need to go fast you can still use analog stick without having to change settings.
I'm not sure if it's required to strafe run to unlock any of the cheats, but you'll go so much faster that it'll help a ton!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The game runs 30fps, but I couldn't find a setting to not record 60fps. That's why the video is 60fps unfortunately.
GoldenEye 007 played and recorded on Xbox Series X.
4:25 I place these mines like that so the explosion won't break the glass.
Even though I won't blow them up until later when it doesn't matter as much anyway.
6:20 Don't look away like I did. That's the only reason the guard at 6:24 was already there.
I was planning the last parts of this level in my head... so whoops.
Also during the Natalia protection part.
Guards with hats will shoot you.
Guards without hats go for Natalia. Prioritize these ones.
6:46 When you hear glass break.
8:32 once she leaves you should be safe to go as well. If you're low on ammo, it's a good idea to pick some from where you killed a lot of guards. I didn't because I had more than enough.
I re-recorded multiple videos, because I decided to upgrade this walkthrough to "no damage".
Here's the original video: youtube.com/watch?v=_TreYGtZQS4

My new walkthrough and first "no damage" walkthrough of GoldenEye 007(Xbox Series X) on 00 Agent difficulty.

This is basically a recording test for me.
Something amazing happened today. Xenia(xbox 360 emulator) works on Xbox Series X consoles.
This means Goldeneye XBLA is fully playable.
The real cancelled remaster from 2008.
This version has audio lag unfortunately, but once Xenia Canary build is playable it should be better.
The game can be found online. Can't provide a link for that.
For now the best guide on how to get this working on Xbox Series X is this:
twitter.com/Graslu00/status/1622454645913255937
Xenia also works on PC. And the Goldeneye XBLA can be played on modded Xbox 360 without emulation.
This feels slightly more responsive on modded 360. But that's on the actual hardware so no emulation problems. But it feels really good here as well.

I restarted at 0:25 because if you watch the intro stuff the walking guards will be in different locations.
And I wanted to show how to do this by skipping it. Which is what most people would do anyway. At least after first try.
There's usually a guard walking down there at 1:34 with my timing.
I assume it's the same guard as the one at 2:52. Because normally he's not there when I go back.
At 3:15. If you peek from the right side just enough for Natalya to see you, you won't alert any guards and Natalya will come to you.
If you do use guns and use them near Natalya. She will get scared and run away. Then you'll have to find her before you can finish the mission.
Only your shots will make her run away.

Good thing is you can have both mapped at the same time. So when you don't need to go fast you can still use analog stick without having to change settings.
I'm not sure if it's required to strafe run to unlock any of the cheats, but you'll go so much faster that it'll help a ton!

The game runs 30fps, but I couldn't find a setting to not record 60fps. That's why the video is 60fps unfortunately.

Slaps and knives are ok. You get the knives with the watch magnet from that pit thing you can see at 0:43.
Also single tap with KF7 Soviet(example at 2:44) is ok as long as you're in aim mode.
To get the double Silenced PP7 at 3:24. You need these two safe keys at 2:52 and 3:16
Based on my experience you can make noise in the room at 5:08. Like I did when I shot the camera. I still avoided it until I ran out of pistol ammo.
The guard at 3:51 drops a mission item. I was supposed to look at it before picking it up. But I didn't notice it until I picked it up.
Once you've completed all the other objectives and opened Natalia's cell. You can go straight to the exit. She doesn't need to be near you. Just alive and out of the cell.
So things like 8:03 are completely optional.
And at around 8:15 I was a little nervous. I want to show unnecessary things like that. But I didn't remember what happens in this at all.
Luckily it was clear when it was over and there was plenty of time left.

My new walkthrough and first "no damage" walkthrough of GoldenEye 007(Xbox Series X) on 00 Agent difficulty.

If you can do this fast enough, you'll also have time to check those two rooms on the sides at around 0:30.
I could have, but I like to play this until he's the area where I found him. This is a short and fun challenge.
Also you can continue running as soon as the conversation between Bond and Doak starts. You'll get the door decoder anyway.

I also closed that door when going through(at 0:29). It does open fast, but closing it can help you to not take damage.
