The real story unfolded in the NABU Discord, where we discussed programming a simple game using my C NABU-LIB for the NABU Computer. I recommended that a user leverage ChatGPT for ideas and assistance using the NABULIB.H header file as a reference. This sparked an idea: what if I tasked it with creating a game?In this video, you'll see how I input the NABULIB.H header file into the chat and instructed ChatGPT to develop a Tic-Tac-Toe game for the NABU PC Computer. 94 - NABU CAM is now in COLOR! DJ Sures 2024-04-29 | Thanks to math, a glorious color webcam on the 1980s NABU PC, and, well, said, I'll do it after my presentation at @vcfederation East. If you haven't seen my previous video (youtu.be/-_qZuInslkM), I streamed live video from the PC webcam and remote desktop to the 40+-year-old NABU Computer over the HCCA port. The HCCA port is what the NABU PC uses to connect to its cable modem. It was considered the "network adapter port" on the NABU. Unlike other computers of its era, the NABU had a highspeed RS422 port that it used to load data from a cable modem starting in 1980. Because the z80 CPU is limited to less than 4mhz, the 111kb/sec HCCA port has only a few CPU instructions between bytes. Using compression, I can now transmit a few FPS of full-motion video to the NABU and display it by the VDP TMS9918a on its limited color palette. Also, the TMS9918a is limited to 2 colors per 8 pixels, which means dithering the image is CPU intensive. Also, check out @technicallyworking4real 's video on adding the NABU Internet Adapter as a Windows Service. 91 - NABU Jukebox with 22,000 songs! DJ Sures 2024-03-29 | I was working on real-life stuff and listening to the NABU Computer's SlideShow's random in Cloud CPM. Then I thought, wouldn't it be nice to browse my entire collection of 8-bit chiptunes for the NABU PC. I whipped this up; it ain't pretty, but she works. It's not graphical like you'd expect from me - but it'll do the job. I will also introduce the new Internet Adapter, which will be released soon. It has many new features, including the IA Control (which headless people call headless), so we'll stick with that. I introduced the headless in February 2024 (or so), but I left the NABU for a while. So, in this video, I demonstrate that for the NABU PC. Of course, I couldn't resist streaming some doom, 2nd reality future crew demo, and a Bad Apple. 89 - NABU PC Full Motion Camera Video DJ Sures 2024-03-21 | I chatted with a few Discord users the other day (Production Dave and Lead Solder) about whether streaming full-motion video to the NABU PC was possible. With the baud rate being 111861 bps and 10 bits per byte, that would leave 11kb per second. The NABU Computer's TMS9918a video data processing (VDP) has a graphics resolution of 256x192, which requires 4166 bytes for the bitmap. This means an uncompressed bitmap dump to the VDP would be less than 2 frames per second. I added a compression algorithm, which ranges between 5-10 FPS without measuring, with a B & W image on the NABU Computer.If you wanted to add color, the color generator would require an additional 4166 bytes of data. I am considering adding color for another project I would like to pursue with this feature.*Edit: corrected TMS height resolution in description (thanks, @ahmad-murery )

I decided to add color and a few features as a side project, such as a menu and map HID. In this video, I pull my dusty NABU out of semi-retirement at my cabin. I'm using a new CRT that I liberated in the summer. This is the first time using the CRT, so I'm glad it works. I will demonstrate the new NADOOM, which I'll release soon for everyone to try. Decided to share something different today - while I thought it would be fun to play some Apple ][ computer games with a big bowl of ice cream this evening. I randomly selected a retro computer or console from my shelf, so I decided the Apple ][ computer would fit the bill. This apple ][ is a little different, and while it is a clone, some purists may not 100% agree with what has been done to it. Who remembers… QEMM386 DJ Sures 2023-12-08 | I was talking to a fellow retro enthusiast who runs (I believe) the Calgary Retro Tech group about a video regarding memory management from @TimberwolfK. Great video btw, go watch it (link below). Also, on a side note, the Calgary Retro Tech acronym is CRT... how cool is that?Okay enough sidebars, let me get to the point of this video. Joe mentioned config.sys menus were great for memory management boot types. I gave an example of a boot menu including QEMM as an option. Joe noted, "Whoa, I haven't seen that name in a while." So I said, hold your butts because I have something wild to show you.Here's the blast from the past - I'm wondering how many of you have seen it, and I should do a longer video someday to explore the setup more. But, QEMM386 was a memory manager made by Quarterdeck software. Quarterdeck then created Desqview, a text dos-based multitasking environment. Then, because companies were still hanging onto old Unix mainframes, they created Desqview/X. The great thing about DesqView/X is that it was an X/Windows server on DOS. 84 - NABU 4 Port Prototype Keyboard DJ Sures 2023-05-30 | I found This NABU Computer keyboard in my father's NABU stash. I didn't know that the newer keyboards are only 2 joystick ports, so I've used this for most of my NABU development. I created a 4 player game because I thought that all NABU keyboards had 4 joystick ports. But, since it came from my father, I suspect it was used as a development keyboard during their Canadian-manufactured "beta" experiments. The keyboard for the NABU Personal Computer has a custom hand-written labeled ROM with jumper wires to modify the PCB. I will have to rip the ROM with my EEPROM programmer someday when I return to my place in Calgary.In the meantime, enjoy this NABU PC keyboard video while I dive in and compare it to the mass-produced version.

Well, digitized audio that you could recognize! After publishing that video, I realized the AY-3-8910 on the NABU PC could produce speech synthesis. *BOOM* here it is! Type in any phrase, and the NABU will speak it. There are a few enhancements over the previous version of my digitized. Specifically, it is louder after experiments and tweaks. 82 - NABU Computer Speaks & Digital Audio DJ Sures 2023-05-18 | Another first for the NABU! Turns out the NABU Computer's AY-3-8910 can play digital audio! I'll have to filter the audio file with a bandpass if we want to hear better music. But with spoken words, it sounds great. Quite a few cycles are available during playback, so I don't see why this couldn't be added to any NABU PC games. AY-3-8910 Digital audio for games would be pretty wild - something I'll work on one day. In the meantime, you can run the digital audio sample on your NABU in Cloud CPM User Area 1. The program is named NABUTALK.I guess use cases could be shorter samples for drums, guitars, and synths for music. Or even sound effects for games. 81 - Create a Dynamic CPM drive for NABU PC DJ Sures 2023-05-15 | Here's a new utility for the NABU Computer that allows dynamically creating a drive on demand. This will generate a D: based on the files in your Internet Adapter Store folder. So, rather than copying files using Cloud GUI, RNCMD, or PIP, you can now just put files in the folder on your PC, and they are magically available on the NABU PC.This makes copying files much easier than any other method. So, if you have many files and want to create a custom drive, here you go. You do not need CPMTOOLS or fiddle with any utilities and files. This makes it super easy to access large file collections or try out new programs on the fly.Type CPMDRIVE from the A: User Area 0, and it will create a drive for you based on the files in your RetroNET store folder. 01 - NABU 1600 Introduction and first boot DJ Sures 2023-04-08 | The NABU Computer Andicom division has created several business-focused hardware products. This was a collaboration from the many companies acquired and merged to form the NABU PC Manufacturing Corporation. One such company was Volkercraig, which created serial terminals for accessing mult-user mainframe servers. The NABU computer I am using in this video is the NABU 1600, a successor to the 1200. This NABU PC 1600 was one of the items I kept after my father passed away. It had not been powered on in almost 40 years. 75 - Redirect NABU CPM to Telnet Server DJ Sures 2023-04-03 | The Cloud CPM can redirect the NABU Computer console input and/or output to a telnet server, so you can use telnet clients for those who do not have a serial terminal or serial i/o card in the NABU PC.- The NABULIB GitHub also has an example of how to add TCP Server support to your own programs.- I recommend using PuTTY if you're in Windows as a telnet client.- If using a telnet client that does not support ADM3a, use VT52 or VT102, whichever the applications you use will support. 74 - NABU Computer controlling a robot DJ Sures 2023-03-28 | Having beer with my friend the other day and he asks, "Remember that robot in school for the turtle thing?"Well - yes, yes I do! And I decided it's probably a good idea for the NABU PC to get the same treatment. And of course, stretch it's legs. So in Cloud CP/M, I created a TurtleBot program that can control real robots - any robot, actually. I was thinking of making the commands dynamic, so you can configure your own, but i'd like feedback if it is something that anyone would ever use.It connects to the Synthiam ARC TCP Server that is in the Connection Control. It is quite simple and merely sends commands, such as Forward(), Left(), Right(), Stop(), etc.. 73 - Compiling on NABU and using office software DJ Sures 2023-03-25 | The NABU Computer Cloud CP/M BIOS has been updated to include a fix for the correct ADM3a cursor key codes and IOBYTE redirection. I compiled a spreadsheet software in Borland Turbo Pascal on the NABU PC and ran it. Funny enough, I load WordStar, even though I need help to use it, still! I know I have to stop saying that and eventually learn how to use WordStar. The SuperCalc Spreadsheet software is also really neat, but I need help using that too. What am I good for? Haha - you'll be able to do more with the software! Following a clear-headed review of my Cloud CP/M BIOS for the NABU Computer, I squeezed even more performance out of her. The easiest benchmark I've used is comparing a simple basic program across both BIOS'. The NABU CPM BIOS is the only other BIOS available next to my Cloud BIOS. So, the question is - which one is faster?I use MBASIC against both the NABU BIOS and Cloud CPM BIOS. 68 - Add Your Pics to NABU Computer Slide Show DJ Sures 2023-03-13 | There's a new slideshow in town, which can be customized for the NABU Personal Computer. Use Convert9918 to make jpg/png files into MSX SC2 files. Save them in your SLIDESHOW folder, and boom, you have a custom 8-bit slideshow for the NABU PC. Put your photos on the 8-bit computer and let the slideshow display them randomly. *Edit: answering a comment about the downscale from their camera, it's actually 4-bit because there are only 15 colors (the 16th is transparency). So the title should be 4-bit colors :D - which is also more limiting because there are 32 horizontal tiles with 2 color limits. 67 - NABU Cloud GUI is a file copying machine DJ Sures 2023-03-12 | File management in CPM is a nightmare, err, was a nightmare! Cloud GUI is a CPM CCP OS Relacepment for the NABU Computer - that means Cloud CPM is going graphical if you have yet to see it. They say it couldn't be done on a 64k z80 machine - well, here we are! Only a few more features are left, and we'll be rock'n full-time GUI on a 1984 NABU Personal Computer. Of course, there will always be a CCP Command Shell option for the h4rdc0r3s! In this case, file management can be done with my RNCMD command, which allows copying files from the command line between user areas, drives, and the PC IA on the NABU PC.

64 - NABU Computer Cloud CP/M is getting a GUI DJ Sures 2023-03-06 | When the stars aligned and dropped the NABU PC out of obscurity onto my lap - I was ecstatic with joy being the first to develop software for it in 40 years! I never considered creating an operating system, so making the Cloud CP/M BIOS was the next best thing, specifically being first-of-its-kind. The other day after completing the RNCMD command to make CPM file transfers easier, I realized that CPM has never had a graphical GUI. Well, here we go - hang on because we're going on an operating system environment development ride over the next bit.In the following videos, I'll dive further into the framework. 61 - NABU Computer Printing with Cloud CP/M DJ Sures 2023-02-26 | Okay, don't have a printer connected to the NABU Personal Computer? We can print a file to the internet adapter's store folder. Yup, that's right. Also, I dropped a little bomb in the video that I'm working on something else, which is super cool. There's a slight delay tonight because of an issue with the z88dk file IO. I might have to use the CPM filesystem directly using BDOS, so we'll wait 24 hours to see what the dev team says before I continue. I didn't spend much time on it, so that question for you all is: Is this something you'd like to development continue with? Or should I move on and leave it as is. I was going to move the RetroNET Chat to an IRC server - so that was my original motivation. What do you all think?
