5 Fascinating Owls of North America Lesley the Bird Nerd 2022-07-23 | It's always a treat when we get to see an owl. Some species stand out though or do things differently. Their stern serious look and practically turning their head upside down is too comical. Great Horned Owls are very large and very widespread too, found throughout all of North America and even throughout South America. There isn’t a habitat these large birds can’t make a suitable home it seems. Among owls these guys have the most varied diet too, preying on tiny rodents, scorpions, and bats, to skunks, rabbits, rats, birds and anything in between. The Great Grey is one of our tallest owl species. One of the most interesting things about this large bird is how they hunt. Their strikingly beautiful face has dish-shaped feathers surrounding it that work to funnel sound to its ears, this combined with their asymmetrical ear openings, left ear opening higher on the head than the right ear opening enables precise directional hearing and lets them grab hidden prey. It is so good that they can hunt just by sound alone. The Short-eared Owls are very common in the United States. An odd thing about them is that while most owls do not build their own nests, these guys actually do. The female will scrape a bowl-shaped nest into the ground and line it with things such as grass and soft feathers. A fascinating thing is that if a female is forced to leave her nest, by a predator she will defecate on the eggs. The rancid smell is thought to repel predators or mask the scent of the eggs. That is a pretty good defense mechanism. The Snowy owl. Breath-taking birds to see, their yellow glowing eyes and beautiful snow-white plumage work very well to blend them into their surrounding snowy environment. An interesting thing is that every 4 to 5 years, their favorite prey, voles, and lemmings drop significantly, making it hard for them to live in the arctic, so large numbers of snowies leave Moving southward by the hundreds and sometimes thousands. Making their winter home across Canada and in many states of the Lower 48. What a spectacular treat. 5 Awesome Chickadee Abilities Lesley the Bird Nerd 2022-08-20 | Did you know that Chickadees are able to shrink and expand a part of their brain? That's not all they can do, Chickadees have many neat abilities up their sleeve/wing.Chickadees are one of the most fun birds to watch, and thanks to the fact that they live close to humans, and have a super curious way they make for easy birds to observe. Always in constant motion, these active birds can barely sit still for a moment. Their high energy demands have them searching for insects and seeds to eat from sun up to sun down, even more so in winter. As they hunt and forage there seem to be no limits to the angles they can climb and hang on. You may see one clinging on sideways as it pecks into a branch, clutched onto the trunk of a tree, hopping up a limb, or more impressively hanging upside down on a berry as it eats it. This ability to hang upside down is due to their strong, long legs. This feeding behavior is no doubt adorable to us as we watch, but for them, a very great and practical way to get at hard-to-reach food sources, such as berries or buds at the ends of twigs.One fun thing about these tiny acrobats is the fact that they hide food away in the trees for later feeding, an interesting behavior, known as food caching. Every summer chickadees get busy preparing for the leaner times of winter by hoarding thousands of insects and seeds into the trees throughout their territory. That is a lot of hidden food to remember, and they can recall each of these for at least a month which is incredible, but just how do they do it? Well, there are a couple of things, firstly Chickadees recall their caches by using spatial organization. This type of memory involves learning and remembering one's previous experiences in its environment. Visuospatial cues such as the arrangement of trees and other items help Chickadees remember the precise location of their cache sites. Another fascinating thing is that the part of their brain responsible for memory, the hippocampus, expands in volume by as much as 30 percent in late summer. This increase of new nerve cells allows them enough storage space for information on all that stored food. In Spring, when they don’t need this anymore, it shrinks back to its normal size. Probably the most amazing thing that chickadees can do, as if the other things aren’t amazing enough, is the ability to lower their daytime body temperature of 42C down to around 20-30C at night. This nifty trick comes in handy for chickadees at higher elevations and latitudes who experience really short cold days over the winter season. With food scarce and daylight minimal, it is a challenge for small endothermic birds like chickadees to find and eat enough in order to not starve or freeze to death. They can only gain as much as 10 percent of their body weight in fat each day. On mild winter nights, this is plenty to sustain their energy demands as they shiver to stay warm. When temperatures fall far below 0 though, they cannot survive on their fat stores without some help. In order to get the most out of their energy reserves, a reduction in metabolism is required, which is achieved by reducing their body temperature as much as possible, anywhere between 10-20 degrees, therefore minimizing heat loss and saving on energy. This combination of shivering and a reduced metabolism is a torpor-like state called regulated Hypothermia. Capable of laying as many as 12 eggs, chickadees sure have their work cut out for them. The ability of these birds to be such attentive hard-working parents is heart-touching. The combined effort of the mother brooding the young and the male constantly looking for food to bring back to the nest, ensure that the needs of their babies are met. In some years, if there is a bumper crop of their favorite insects, chickadees will try for a second brood after the first one has fledged. What a mama! The fact that they can have a second one, provided the conditions are right, is pretty remarkable, to say the least. If any are spotted they quickly dive down without much of a ripple left above.Common Loons have solid bones, which makes them not so buoyant therefore allowing them to dive very well. An interesting thing is that When they dive into the water, their feathers are compressed and the air is forced from between the feathers and from the air sacs in the body. This loss of air lets them quietly sink below the surface and avoid danger. Common Loons like to raise their young in forested lakes or large ponds throughout northern North America. One great thing about Common Loons is that since they need crystal clear lakes, their presence is a good indicator of water quality. A good population of small fish along with the ability to see them underwater is needed in order for a pair to take up residency. A small lake between 5 to 50 ha can sustain one couple. Lakes that have coves and islands are preferred, helping to provide them with cover while they nest or take a break. Nesting takes place on land in a well-protected quiet spot hidden in the lake shore, like the lee of islands, or in a sheltered back bay. Walking is not their strongest attribute because the legs are placed very far back on their body. This makes them awkward on land. For this reason, nests are placed close to a bank that has a steep drop-off, permitting them to approach the nest from underwater. Artificial nesting platforms are used by common loons as well, typically in places with a lot of shoreline development. They are known to reuse a nest site the following year. Fixing up the old one rather than starting all over again.Typically around late June to early July, little dark brown fluffs appear on the water, the chicks. Only two eggs are usually laid, so there are just one or two babies, which are able to swim right away. Despite being able to navigate in the water immediately, chicks prefer to ride around on their parent's back a lot of the time. Where they are can rest, prevent too much heat loss since they are mostly down, and hide from large predators. Parents provide a great deal of care to their babies, feeding and protecting them in the early stages. As many as 70 times a day the chicks are fed, but As Summer nears the end the fledglings are capable of feeding themselves. The most iconic thing about these birds is their captivating calls which have a way of creating a sense of peace and serenity. Common loons can be very vocal, especially in the late evening. After sundown, the north woods is described as reverberating with the echoes of wails, yodels, and tremolos. Their calls have an eerie yet beautiful aspect to them, especially the wail, a soulful cry that loons give back and forth to know each other's location. Another haunting call, the Yodel, is made by males who use it to claim territory. Not every male's yodel is the same, each has its own signature sound, and can change it if he moves to a new territory. Even tremolos which are usually used as alarm calls are quite something to hear. Used to signal aggression to other males, defend a territory, and attract and arouse females. 🟢The Gargle Song / CallThis call is an aggressive, vocalization that lasts just half a second in total. it is complex and varies a lot. They are given by males and are associated with dominance establishment and territory defense.The gargle vocalization is easily heard from the middle of winter into Spring and again in Fall. Gargles can also be given in a sexual context, sometimes during a male's dawn chorus performance; these Gargles are not associated with aggression but are often associated with copulation.🟢Broken dee CallThe broken dee can only be heard during the breeding season. It sounds similar to a baby chickadee, however, it is much different and if you hear it then you know you have yourself a female since it is only females who make it. They begin using it once the nest cavity has been completed and through early incubation. If the male is nearby, the calls are often accompanied by Wing Quivering and usually elicit feeding by the male. 🟢Faint Feebee CallThis call is very much like the Feebee song but is always much lower in amplitude. This call is given by both males and females during the breeding season, and usually near the nest. Often when the male arrives at the nest with food he uses this faint feebee to let his mate know he is there. The female also uses it when inside the nest to alert her nestlings to feeding time. As babies near fledging, it is used again by the male, as a way to encourage the young to leave the nest.🟢Hiss AlarmThis call is only heard inside the nest or other enclosed small spaces and is used typically by an incubating female when she is startled especially by an intruder trying to get inside. This is widespread among the Paridaefamily and has been given the name, Snake display. The Black-and-white Warbler Lesley the Bird Nerd 2022-05-14 | The Black and White Warbler is fun to watch as they move about. This, combined with their curious nature and bold coloration makes them a favorite warbler for beginner birders since they are easy to spot and recognize. Measuring around 4 - 5 inches in length and weighing almost half an ounce, these medium-sized warblers have a short neck and tail, and a long slightly downcurved bill.The difference between the sexes, males have a lot more black streaking, especially on their underparts and cheek. Females and juveniles are similar to one another but with paler plumage and less streaking, also note a light brownish yellow on their flanks and a white throat and grayish ear patch. Spending their winters as far south as Central and South America. In these tropical locations, they can be seen in gardens and other urban locations, wetlands, fruit orchards, and many types of forests. During migration, they can be found in woodlots and forests in riparian areas. Look for them hanging out in deciduous and mixed forests, especially with trees of mixed ages. The Black and white warbler is the only member of the Genus genus Mniotilta, which means Moss-plucking a reference to how they probe bark and moss for insects, the bulk of their diet is larva from moths and butterflies. Many other insects are preyed on, such as ants, leaf beetles, wood borers, leafhoppers, and weevils, they also eat arachnids like spiders. During Migration and at the beginning of Spring listen for their easily heard and kind of squeaky weesy song, Another call used by both sexes is a sharp chit and pit call which can have many variations. Black-and-white Warbler nests are round open cups around 5 inches or more in diameter and 5 inches high and are made from dry leaves, pine needles, bark strips, and grass. 4-6 eggs that measure 0.6 -0.8 inches in length and 0.5-0.6 inches in width are laid and are creamy white, pale bluish, or greenish-white with speckles of brown or lavender. The female incubates them.Black and white warblers are common and their population is estimated by Partners in flight at around 20 million. On the Continental Concern Score, they rate a 10 out of 20 and are not on the 2014 state of birds Watch list. Perhaps because of how pleasing they are to our ears. It’s recognized by researchers at the University of Surrey who have tested the restorative benefits of birdsong to see whether or not it really does improve our mood, that the calls and songs of birds do indeed help people recover from stress. By reducing stress, we can then refocus our attention. The combination of the outdoors, and their chirps are the best way to go, and can literally be utilized to our advantage as a great way to cancel out the pressures of our day-to-day life. Taking a few minutes each day to connect with the natural world especially listening to birds singing, has the potential to improve our mental and emotional health, giving us greater overall well-being. Simply put, birdsong is actually good for you. I can attest to this. So far this Spring I’ve had a few experiences where I was out in the woods and heard various songs from the birds. It was such a pleasant feeling and with the combination of mild temperatures, receding snow revealing the grass and ground below, as well as that signature smell Spring carries with it, I was in absolute bliss. There was zero stress, worry, or problematic thoughts. Some may not realize that while bird song is so peaceful to us, for them it’s actually a biological process that is a serious matter of life and death between each singer. The beautiful songs we hear are mostly sung by male birds for the purpose of warning other males to not come treading on their turf, as well as to impress a female onlooker. Simply put it's a fight to win at passing on their genes.Every Spring males need to return to their breeding grounds, often before the females, singing on their territory all day long and even throughout the night for many. Since a lot of individual songbirds live just one or two years, it’s their only chance, they may not get another. With such pressure behind their lovely chirping, it’s rather curious how it affects us in such a pleasant way. Although they sing for serious reasons, I do like to think that maybe they enjoy their songs as much as we do, and sometimes sing just because they are in the mood. Who knows how could we say for sure what goes on in the mind of a bird With Spring taking place, you have a great opportunity to set the alarm and go out for an early morning stroll or sit on your back step, to listen to the birds singing in your area, and hopefully reap the benefits.
