VW long axle vs short axle. In this video I went over some of the differences between the long and short axles. Remember though, stock application, 67 was the first year of the long axle, but had a short spline. 68 (Non-IRS) had the long axle with a long spline.
Below is where I bought my VW Thing drums to solve my issues using the long axle/long spline setup, but allowed me to retain the 5 lug pattern.
The over all difference in length (how much wider your tires will sit) was about 3.5” on each side.

You will also need to get the longer hard brake lines and the longer emergency hand brake cable (using the longer ones off a 1968). If you are putting a longer axle on a 66 and older.
