VVS clarity diamonds are often marketed as being more bright and brilliant than lower clarity grade diamonds. But is that really true? Or is it just a marketing scam to make you spend more money on your purchase?
In this video we performed a side by side comparison of a VVS diamond ring against a VS diamond ring to reveal the truth behind the claims. Both diamonds are mounted in identical solitaire settings and both diamonds are selected with identical cut performance. As we rock the diamond to and fro in the video, make sure you keep your eyes peeled and see if you can tell any differences between them.
So, what exactly are VVS and VS diamonds? In short, VVS diamonds are almost perfect clarity grades and they have very very minor flaws that a trained gemologist would have difficulty in detecting at 10X magnification. To put things in perspective, if an expert has trouble finding the inclusions, I can guarantee that a casual shopper like you will NEVER see them. In fact, I will go as far as to say that ALL VVS diamonds are going to be eyeclean.
But, this peace of mind and high quality clarity rating comes at an expensive price. Most people actually don’t need a VVS diamond for an eyeclean diamond ring. VS diamonds only contain minor flaws that are hard for the naked eyes to see and you can get a diamond that visually looks just as good.
Technically, the main differences between VVS and VS clarity lie in the size/type/location of inclusions the diamond has. VVS diamonds have smaller and less visible flaws while VS diamond tend to have inclusions that are easier to spot using a 10X loupe. But the point is, without magnification and in a casual viewing, most people cannot tell the diamonds apart.
The advantages of a VS clarity is that you get a better price point that is less expensive. Also, because of rarity factors, you tend to find more options of VS clarity diamonds available for selection.
At the end of the day, clarity is largely a matter of personal preferences. Some people mind the fact that they can see inclusions under magnification. If this bugs you, then pay for an upgrade to VVS clarity. But if you are a practical person, getting a VS diamond may make more economical sense.
