This past week in particular has seen unimaginable violence and the world seems crueller than ever before. Whilst I'm no expert in poetry writing, and this is the first poem I've written for a long time, I felt the need to try and express myself creatively.
(Instrumental music is 'The Shadow People' by Lucas King: youtube.com/watch?v=kMSmZkR2o-U)
Black clouds cover the sky. Lightning strikes above.
You’re walking, you’re living, with lions
who will never lay down calmly with lambs.
Lions whose roars can be heard for millions of miles;
roars that make you shiver with fright,
and make you feel incapable of facing the world alone.
Walls crash around you. Everything caves in.
The bricks, the dust, the ashes,
Have covered up every possible escape route
from this lion’s den.
There’s no way you can leave this situation
without being mortally wounded.
You’re small,
You’re terrified,
And you’re not safe.
But you feel there’s nothing, there’s nothing you can do.
“When will they come for me?”
You question with terror, anger, and pain.
Then in almost an instant you see a shadow approaching,
A shadow whose deformity comes not in its physicality
but in its corrupt, monstrous and reprobate mind,
A mind that has no compassion, no acceptance, and no sense of humanity.
A mind that is full of hatred, abhorrence, and enmity,
A mind that wants to divide rather than connect,
A mind that is responsible for your truly unfortunate fate.
Fate that comes in the form of an untimely death.
You offended them
because you spoke your mind,
fought for your rights,
took a stance against harsh inequalities,
and refused to accept such hateful ideology.
And faced with those who disagree with happiness, harmony and hope,
You were mocked,
You were laughed at,
And you were victimised... with violence.
And violence, ‘violence is the last refuge of the incompetent’.
