FIESTRAVAGANZA International Music Academy | Official Trailer (2023)

Shaun Choo 2023-06-14 | The first edition of the “Fiestravaganza International Music Academy” (FIMA) will be held in Berlin from 10th - 16th of July 2023, in collaboration with Bechstein Music World Singapore, C. Bechstein and the Carl Bechstein Stiftung. Among the supporters of this initiative are the Singapore National Arts Council, Singapore Embassy Berlin and the German-Chinese Association for Cultural Exchange.

As the first major piano summer academy in Berlin, FIMA offers foreign young talents, particularly those in the Asia-Pacific region like Singapore, a variety of opportunities otherwise hard to obtain in one’s early career. Participants will gain recognition through numerous solo performances and even get to perform with orchestra, while working with renowned instructors and guest speakers via the masterclasses/seminars offered. They will also get the exclusive chance to work on Bechstein’s extensive Vintage Keyboard Instrument collection, ranging from Clavichords from the Baroque Era, Fortepianos from Mozart’s time and even a Pleyel and other instruments from the early romantic period. The week-long intensive program targets the development of a well-rounded musician, which sets FIMA apart from many festivals.

As the highlight of the academy, selected participants will join Shaun Choo on stage to perform various piano concertos with the Camerata Fiestravaganza. The orchestra brings together around 40 talented musicians from diverse cultures and ethnicities, the majority of which are current students from the three major Universities of music in Berlin – Universität der Künste, Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and Barenboim-Said Akademie.

The latest in a long line of piano transcriptions I've recently added to my repertoire, and undoubtedly one of the most beautifully sorrowful (and painfully delicate) I've had the pleasure of tackling so far.

This arrangement of Rachmaninov's Vocalise has such rich harmonies and polyphony that it overwhelms me just deciding how to voice every chord and supporting line. The pedalling in itself is a challenge, subtly changing frequently enough to avoid muddying the progressive harmonic changes, while "catching" all the notes of the often widespread chords in a single pedal 😅

This piece brings back memories of my time in Salzburg, Austria, where the film was shot at. As a child, I watched the movie many times, not knowing that I would spend a decade living in the picturesque Austrian town.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the movie, you might still have heard a version of this song by pop superstar Ariana Grande, whose song “7 Rings” uses the same melody

Bossa Nova for Piano Solo by Shaun Choo (FUN PIECE FOR PIANO COMPETITION CONTEMPORARY WORK!!!)

Shaun Choo 2023-02-06 | After a pretty long break from writing music, I am back with another whacky piece for piano solo, this time written specifically for the purpose of playing at piano competitions and other events which require a contemporary piece written after 1945 or something similar. I remember, back when I was a frequent competitor at such events, I always struggled to find a suitable work - pieces I fancied were mostly written too early, with many later works being too abstract for my primitive taste.

To show a variety of characters compressed within a timeframe of just over three minutes, "Bossa Nova" consists of no less than three miniatures seamlessly strung together! Um, dois, três, let's go!

Shaun Choo | Camerata Fiestravaganza - Valsenchanté for Piano & Orchestra (WORLD PREMIERE!)

Shaun Choo 2023-01-27 | A fusion of the Spanish words "Fiesta" (festival) and "Extravaganza" (extravagant), Camerata Fiestravaganza celebrates the creation of a new chamber orchestra, with nearly 40 personally-selected talented musicians coming together from diverse cultures and ethnicities, the majority of which are current students from the three major Universities of music in Berlin Universität der Künste, Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and Barenboim-Said Akademie.

Camerata Fiestravaganza's debut concert was held at the UdK Concert Hall, Berlin on 16th May 2022, led by renowned American conductor Evan-Alexis Christ and more than ten-time International Prize-Winning Singaporean Classical Pianist, Composer and Teacher Shaun Choo at the piano.

Together, they performed Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in e minor Op. 11, as well as the world premiere of Shaun's debut work for Piano and Orchestra - Valsenchanté. Originally written for piano four-hands, the enchanted Waltz has been specially re-arranged for this ensemble, highlighting the capabilities of each member by playfully-interwoven melodic lines exchanged between instrument groups.

This event was made possible by the funding from the German Federal Government for Culture and Media as part of NEUSTART KULTUR.

The P.O.P. Rag for Piano Solo by Shaun Choo (Studio Version)

Shaun Choo 2022-12-24 | Rummaged around my old recordings and found one I forgot to post from March 2017 😅 a studio recording of my original composition "The P.O.P. Rag". I have always been fascinated by the rhythmic syncopations found in Ragtime, having played many rags of Scott Joplin etc. myself since a young age. After being enlisted in the military in 2011, I underwent a basic training phase of 17 weeks on a dedicated island, which ended with an approx. 24km route march which lasted throughout the night towards a parade square where our parents and loved ones awaited our arrival. Upon being formally reunited with the piano, I was inspired to write this fun little piece in celebration of having completed the "Passing-Out Parade", hence the acronym P.O.P. ;)

It's been just over 5 years since I wrote my first four-hands piece - Fiestravaganza. Created as a Chamber music assignment during my Bachelor years, it has proven to be my most successful piece so far, with almost 200 score purchases and counting, and it warms my heart to see many Piano Duos around the world share their performances of it on YouTube etc. Some have even taken it to Piano Duo contests and won! Bravissimo!

Well the wait is over, and I'm back with another four-hands work, this time a Waltz entitled "Valsenchanté", which is a combination of the words "Enchanted Waltz" in the French language. It is my sincere hope that it proves to be a worthy successor to "Fiestravaganza", and that its music will "enchant" you by its fantasy world of moods and colors.
