This is my Voyager 4k intro “Nebula” segment. From the outset I knew that this would be the most difficult segment to produce, mainly because I had no idea how., compounded with LightWave's lack of fluid sims. Problem solving is good, and one should always take on projects that push experience forward.
It’s taken the best part of a month to finish it, my electricity bill is going to be huge with all of the test renders, and I bought a plugin called TurbulenceFD which is designed for fluid and gas dynamic simulations.
The fluid sim alone ran in to 650GB, 1.94million particles. My render nodes have 500gb drives though, so I had to also configure my workstation to act as a network drive and not fall over when it was also rendering as a node.
I could keep on refining it, there are bits I'd like to push forward a bit further, but part of VFX is sticking to the budget. In my case the budget is time.
But I’m proud of the results and must move on to other segments now. I’ve pretty much pushed the plugin to it’s limits here, it’s designed for fire and smoke explosive sims, I wish there were an option for randomising the particle size a bit so the nose of Voyager had more going on.
I figure the 2nd most complex segment will be the ringed planet, so I’m going to do one of the more simplistic scenes next so I don’t have to work for another month to get a sense of completion and satisfaction!
