A group of rock-and-roll-loving aliens travels across the galaxy in a guitar-shaped spaceship to find the source of rock music. After landing in a small town, they get caught between a talented local singer and her jealous, punk-leader boyfriend.

The film is packed with fascinating 80s history, most notably featuring the feature film debut of Craig Sheffer alongside the legendary Ruth Gordon in one of her final roles. A major highlight for fans is the voice of the snarky robot assistant, provided by Peter Cullen, the iconic voice of Optimus Prime. Interestingly, the movie was a favorite of director John Waters, who loved Pia Zadora’s performance so much he later cast her in Hairspray. On the production side, the film features the real-life New Wave band Rhema as the aliens and includes a massive synth-pop hit, "When the Rain Begins to Fall." Though the music video with Jermaine Jackson was filmed separately in Italy and has little to do with the plot, it was added to capitalize on the song's huge success in Europe.
