Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) is a phenomenon that occurs when fluid flow past a bluff (non-streamlined) body induces oscillating forces perpendicular to the direction of the flow. These oscillating forces are due to the alternating shedding of vortices from either side of the body, leading to periodic pressure differences and consequently causing the body to vibrate.
