Voodoo is often pictured through Hollywood stereotypes: dolls, zombies, curses, animal sacrifices, horror scenes, and dark rituals. But the deeper issue is not merely what voodoo looks like in movies — it is how spirit possession, rhythm, music, chanting, drums, masks, candles, altars, saints, orishas, lwa, and trance-like ceremonies operate inside real spiritual systems.
Voodoo and Santeria practitioners openly describe music, clapping, singing, drums, repetitive rhythms, candles, altars, Catholic saint imagery, and spiritual “doorways” as part of ceremonies used to invite spirits into the body. The disturbing question is this: if certain rhythms and songs are used to bring down spirits in voodoo ceremonies, how much of modern entertainment, dance culture, hip-hop, pop music, concert worship, and even some Christian music may be opening spiritual doors people do not understand?
Aubrey shares a deeply personal testimony from her years in hip-hop dance, describing moments where choreography felt like “downloads,” where rhythms seemed to overtake her body, where aggression, sensuality, and loss of awareness became part of the movement, and where she later recognized the spiritual danger behind what once felt like talent, expression, and inspiration.
This is not simply about music preference. This is about spiritual discernment. The Bible warns that Satan does not need to appear obviously dark in order to deceive. Pagan rhythms, possession religions, trance states, repetitive beats, occult practices, frequency, hypnotic movement, and spirit-led ceremonies can all appear as culture, art, dance, celebration, worship, or entertainment.
The same patterns show up across cultures: African spiritual systems, Caribbean voodoo, Santeria, Catholic syncretism, masked dances, spirit possession, trance ceremonies, drums, sacrifice, fertility symbolism, ancestor worship, and ritual movement. When a person gives themselves over to the rhythm, the mask, the performance, or the feeling, the question must be asked: what spirit is moving?
Modern Christians rarely talk about music and dance through the lens of spiritual warfare. Yet Scripture repeatedly warns against idolatry, pagan worship, witchcraft, divination, sorcery, false gods, and opening doors to familiar spirits. The enemy does not care whether the doorway is labeled voodoo, Santeria, yoga, New Age, Hollywood, hip-hop, pop culture, or “Christian” entertainment — he only needs the door opened.
This message is a call to wake up, test the spirits, examine the fruit, and ask hard questions about the entertainment we love. Are we being moved by the Holy Spirit, or by another spirit? Are we worshiping God in truth, or participating in ancient pagan practices with modern names, modern beats, and modern costumes?
The goal is not condemnation — it is freedom. Jesus Christ sets captives free, exposes darkness, and gives His people discernment. The more we understand how the enemy works through rhythm, repetition, possession, emotion, and performance, the less likely we are to unknowingly participate in spiritual practices God calls us out of.
