He does it to train a muscle most people never build: the ability to function when everything falls apart.

He calls it voluntary artificial adversity.

Choose suffering on your own terms so you are prepared when suffering chooses you.

When Hurricane Helene destroyed his community in East Tennessee, the lessons from running unreasonable distances through mountains kicked in.

He was able to manage himself, protect his family, and help others.

Most of us live in safe neighborhoods with food on the table.

That comfort is not a reason to avoid hard things.

It is the reason you must seek them out before they find you.
