A plug in device which disconnects the supply if the voltage goes above or below set thresholds. This one has the UK plug and socket, other types are available.

This will protect against 'surges' which is where the voltage goes too high for seconds or minutes.
Unrelated to the other kind of 'surges' which are high voltage transients lasting microseconds.
