An opening cartoon sequence portrays the legendary and the scientific explanations of the origin of New Zealand's main volcanic belt. Live action shows uses of small private steam bores, Government drilling of deep bores at Wairakei, spectacular shots of a "rogue" bore which burst out of control, and the selection of new drilling sites. Also the measuring of steam output, the coping with problems of wet steam and other difficulties, and the first big geothermal power-station in action. Concluding cartoon sequence indicates future prospects.
