I am SO happy this project is finally finished! I have been dying to share it with you guys. I had started working on this already in September 2019. Hard to believe I’d been working on this AMV for almost a year now…. 😅 but I took a lot of breaks in between hahaha.

So I’ve been obsessed with this whole “retrowave" comeback trend for awhile now, and I knew I’d eventually want to do a full AMV centered around this theme, but wasn’t quite sure yet how to go about it, and didn’t have a solid idea of what I wanted to do. What ultimately inspired me to start on this video was the work of ReyNeroKun, I think I watched an MEP track that he had done, and I was like YES, this is what I want to do, but on a larger scale. I started trying to watch more like cyberpunk content and movies (like Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell), to get more ideas visually of how I wanted the world of my AMV to look. And A LOT of browsing Pinterest! That’s like my go-to these days for coming up with mood boards, and visuals. Oh and that Panini music video by Lil Naz, huge inspo for this. So yeah, those inspired the overall setting/theme of this AMV.

As far as the context and story, a lot of it was pulled based on what was provided through the scenes of the original anime. I loved how subtly queer it was, without it being an in-your-face, overly sexualized Yuri or whatever, as so often is the case in anime. And I appreciated the complexity of the relationship (or so was my interpretation from the scenes - I did not watch this anime in full). Based on my interpretation, the relationship/sexuality between these two girls is not clearly defined. The lines are blurred, as is sometimes the case in real life, and that is fine. And I have found this to be true in my own life as well, and have only recently been able to acknowledge that with myself. So I really enjoyed exploring the relationship between these two characters, and defining a relationship between them that’s not necessarily lovers, but not “just friends" either. It’s more complex, and that’s what I wanted to portray.

An underlying theme, that plays as the subtext throughout the entire video, is an unavoidable natural disaster, which I feel kinda relates to the mindset we are in right now, although not on an “end-of-the-world” scale. (However, lately it sometimes feels like the end of the world…) When I started this AMV, there was no “coronavirus" yet hahaha, so I had no idea how this context was going to fit into today’s world. I feel bad to release something so gloomy and sad. With everything going on, I wish I could have created something more uplifting, because I feel we could use a bit more joy right now.

If nothing else, I hope this can serve as entertainment, and a 3-minute distraction from our currently unpredictable lives right now. I am wishing everyone well-being and safety. I know things look like sh*t right now, but I’m SURE things will turn around. Try to keep positive! And wherever you are in life right now, is exactly where you need to be (even if that place is in your bed looking at your phone right now hahahaha). Find comfort in doing whatever you are mentally capable of right now. And don’t let anyone, anything convince you otherwise. ❤️- Jazzy
