She appeared in several popular films and TV shows during her childhood, including When a Man Loves a Woman, One Fine Day, Independence Day, Chicago Hope, and JAG. As an adult, she became widely known for her roles in the TV series Arrested Development, Parenthood, and Good Girls, while also appearing in movies such as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and The DUFF.
In addition to live-action acting, Whitman has built a successful voice-acting career. She is known for voicing characters such as Shanti in The Jungle Book 2, Katara in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Rose in American Dragon: Jake Long, Tinker Bell in the Tinker Bell movies, Wonder Girl in Young Justice, April O'Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Amity Blight in The Owl House, and Annie in Skull Island. She also returned as Roxie Richter in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
