Los VNTR, por sus siglas en inglés de Variable Number of Tandem Repeats, más conocidas como minisatélites, que son repeticiones de secuencias de entre 6-25 nucleótidos que incluyen miles de pares de bases, que se utilizan como marcadores moleculares. El número de repeticiones de estas secuencias, como bien indica su nombre, es variable. Muchos de estos loci muestran hipervariabilidad en sus números de repetición en humanos y en animales y, por lo tanto, también se denominan loci de repetición en tándem de número variable (VNTR) y estos son una herramienta para la genotipificación y proporciona datos en un formato simple y no ambiguo basado en el número de secuencias repetitivas. VNTR (Variable Number of Tandem Repeats) better known as minisatellites which are repetitions of sequences between nucleotides including 6 to 25 thousand base pairs, which are used as molecular markers. The number of repetitions of these sequences, as the name suggests, is variable.
The number of repetitions is variable but generally less than 1000.
Detection
VNTR detection can be performed by DNA hybridization or PCR techniques. In the first case, the genomic DNA is digested with restriction enzymes that recognize sites adjacent to the repeat region. The fragments are separated by electrophoresis, immobilized on a membrane and detected with probes as RFLP markers.
Minisatellites also be detected by PCR amplification of the genome segments containing different number of repetitions, using you initiators or "primers" flanking VNTR. After DNA amplification, the fragments were visualized by electrophoresis.
