Introducing VMP Anthology: The Story of Cadet Records: a limited-edition vinyl box set featuring eight albums of boundary pushing, deep-cut jazz, blues and soul music. The Story of Cadet Records takes listeners on an immersive journey through the brief heyday of the Chicago label, a subsidiary of Chess Records that launched the careers of everyone from Minnie Riperton to Earth, Wind and Fire.
Run by the heir to the Chess name and record label, Marshall Chess, Cadet relied on the production genius of Charles Stepney and Richard Evans and the talent of cornerstone musicians like Riperton, Phil Upchurch, Ramsey Lewis and many more. It blended the disparate strands of blues, jazz and R&B with the nascent psych-rock that was dominating the charts, and produced some of the most forward-thinking music of the late ’60s and early ’70s. Its catalog would become sample fodder for ’90s hip-hop legends like the Fugees, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, and appear on everything from Mac Miller and Jay-Z albums, to J Dilla and Madlib beat tapes.
