Schools Going Electric in the North Country Mountain Lake PBS 2024-05-10 | We take you to Malone Central School, one of the first school districts in the North Country buying electric buses. We'll talk with the Superintendent about how the school district is trying out 4 new electric buses that arrived in the past several months.Malone CSD bought the buses in advance of a mandate by the State of New York that all buses purchased after 2027 be electric or zero-emission. Federal EPA grant money helped the school district buy the buses for about 60-thousand dollars each, far below the cost of a new gas or diesel bus. The grant money also helped cover the cost up the equipment and infrastructure needed to charge the buses' batteries.

Migrants Memorial at SUNY Plattsburgh Mountain Lake PBS 2024-05-10 | An artist places a wooden cross on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus in tribute to 3 migrants who in recent months have lost their lives crossing the Northern Border. The cross is one of nearly 1,600 that Alvaro Enciso has placed across the United States in memory of migrants who have died while attempting to cross both the Northern and Southern Borders.

Raising the Spitfire Mountain Lake PBS 2024-05-03 | New efforts are underway into raising the historic Revolutionary War gunboat, the Spitfire, from the bottom of Lake Champlain. The plan being put forth by Art Cohn and other nautical archeologists would raise & preserve the historic gunboat from the lake bottom where it has sat for nearly 250 years since sinking the day after the Battle of Valcour in 1776. Cohn is recommending the gunboat become the centerpiece of a new museum that would share Lake Champlain’s military history with a new generation.New studies are underway this spring into evaluating the condition of the boat, as well as business plans to finance the raising and conservation of the Spitfire as well as finding a permanent location to display it. The Gift of Life Mountain Lake PBS 2024-05-03 | The month of April is National Donate Life Month, and to raise awareness about the critical need for organ donors in New York State, community leaders in Malone gathered this week to honor a local organ donor, Jodi Andrews, and her incredible gift of life. Andrews, a mom & grandmother, died unexpectedly last fall at the age of 52. Her decision to register as an organ donor saved the lives of four other people who were in desperate need of organ transplants.Jodi's husband, Mike, read a heartfelt letter of thanks from one of the recipients at a ceremony this week. Jodi's daughter, Rylee, said she hopes her mother's incredible act of generosity will encourage others to become organ donors. New York State currently has one of the lowest organ donation enrollment rates in the nation, but Jodi’s family and community leaders, including NYS Assemblyman Billy Jones, say they hope her act of kindness will help inspire more people to become donors.To become an organ donor, you can learn more or register at any state DMV Office or online at www.donatelifenys.org

Salmon Raised in Pens in Lake Champlain Mountain Lake PBS 2024-04-19 | A pilot program using protected pens in Lake Champlain will raise small Atlantic Salmon over the next few weeks that will be released into the lake in the hopes that they will return there and the near-by Saranac River to spawn in future years. The experimental program is designed to help boost the salmon population in the Saranac River.
Eclipse Tourism in the North Country Mountain Lake PBS 2024-04-19 | Tens of thousands of visitors came to the Adirondacks & North Country to watch the spectacular Solar Eclipse. And it turns out, they spent millions of dollars, while they were here.Some preliminary numbers out this week show the economic impact of the eclipse last week.According to New York's Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism or ROOST, an estimated $2.7 million was spent in Essex County for overnight tourism for the eclipse. That’s at least 500-thousand more compared to last year.
Budget Deal Reached in New York State Mountain Lake PBS 2024-04-19 | Governor Hochul and & legislative leaders agree on a tentative 237-billion-dollar State Budget deal. The agreement includes renewed subsidies for developers to build new housing in New York City and additional tenant protections. Pro-housing communities, like the Town of Plattsburgh, will share 650-million-dollars to help build new homes. Another half-billion dollars will be used for housing on state-owned sites, including former prisons. No word yet whether that could include the former Moriah Shock prison in Essex County. After pushback from lawmakers, the Governor backed off changes she proposed that would have cut foundation aid to about half the school districts in the state. Legislative leaders have agreed, beginning next year, to consider changes in how schools are funded. The budget deal also includes an additional $2-and-a-half billion dollars to help cover New York City’s costs for sheltering migrants. And the Governor’s Office says the budget also includes Hochul’s proposal to allow the state to close up to 5 more prisons in the next year.
Elmore SPCA on Seized Dogs Up for Adoption Mountain Lake PBS 2024-04-19 | Families hoping to adopt dogs seized from a North Country animal rescue get a chance to meet some of the pups up for adoption. The Executive Director of Elmore SPCA and the President of the Shelter's Board of Directors join us to talk about how the 49 dogs seized in late February are doing since being housed and cared for the past 8 weeks in a vacant cell unit at the Clinton County Jail.They also talk about how interested people can go about applying to adopt one of the dogs. A Total Eclipse of the Arts Mountain Lake PBS 2024-04-18 | The total eclipse this month won't likely be forgotten soon by the millions of North Americans who witnessed it. Even before the moon obscured our view of the sun, artists in the North Country were celebrating the celestial event. They created works of art depicting light, shadow, and darkness, a Total Eclipse of the Arts.You may view the exhibit at the North Star Gallery in Malone, New York. Organized by Foothills Art Society, the show features work by 23 creative people from Malone and surrounding areas.Spotlight producer Paul Larson spoke with many artists featured in the exhibit, including Patric Hendrick, Carole Bracy, Amy Webb, Marie Cogar, and Nathan Cox of Seaway Ceramics. Bailey filmed the movie 14-years ago entirely in and around the mining towns of the Adirondacks. The movie tells the story of the immigrants who worked in the iron ores mines in the early 20th century. NAMTrans Transportation Summit Mountain Lake PBS 2024-03-29 | Transportation Manufacturers from both the U-S and Canada gathered in Plattsburgh this past week to talk about the future of the industry and new potential partnerships between companies on both sides of the border. Hosted by the North Country Chamber of Commerce and it’s North American Center of Excellence for Transportation Equipment (NAmTrans) the summit brought together major transportation & aerospace companies to network and to talk about the growing demand for green technology including electric vehicles, batteries, and aircraft.Guest speakers talked about how the region’s transportation hub can build on the already strong trade partnership between New York and Quebec and efforts to address climate change that includes the multi-billion-dollar Hydro-Quebec deal to supply about 20% of New York City’s electricity. This year included a focus on aviation and new partnerships to help BETA Technologies build electric aircraft in Burlington & Plattsburgh.
