"Intense Indifference" is the second studio album by Swedish melodic death metal and thrash metal band Vittra, released independently on September 19, 2025, and available on vinyl, CD, and digitally via Bandcamp. With a total running time of approximately 33 minutes, the album marks an evolution from their debut "Blasphemy Blues" (2022), focusing on an introspective emotional journey: soul-searching amidst internal battles, maintaining a facade of indifference that eventually shatters, revealing layers of rage and catharsis.
Inspired by mythical creatures from Swedish folklore (the name "Vittra" evolved from "Vildvittra," characters from Astrid Lindgren's "Ronja, the Robber's Daughter"), the Köping-based band Västmanland composes with a youthful, hungry energy, blending sharp riffs, melodic harmonies, and a fast-paced thrash that evokes '90s Scandinavian metal. Musically, the album is an irreverent, fast-paced celebration of modern death metal with touches of '80s heavy metal and punk, comparable to At the Gates, early In Flames, Megadeth, Kreator, and even Judas Priest for its catchy groove.
Produced by Johan Murmester (the band's guitarist), recorded by Simon Johansson (Wolf, Soilwork), and mastered by Lawrence Mackrory (F.K.Ü), the sound is crystal clear, brutal, and full of surprises: catchy hooks, screaming solos, and unexpected breakdowns that keep the listener on edge, without complex structures, but with sharp imagination.
Highlights include the opener "MOFO," which sets the tone with a drag-race takeoff and flames on the tires; "Transylvanian Buffet," which opens with a bouncy ska lick and sizzling vocals reminiscent of Pantera; "Hate," the most violent and furious track; and the cover of Slayer's "Piece by Piece" as the closer, perfectly fitting the band's style. Other gems like "Soul Searcher" insert acoustic interludes that delude before exploding with power, and "The Leap" plays with low and high growls in a melodic fire.
The reception has been enthusiastic: critics praise the "manic energy of a caged animal," the "sharper" riffs, and the balance between polish and bite, with scores like 8/10 from Metal Temple (for the power of the strong songwriting) and 9/10 from The Rock Father (for the exciting variety).
