Visual Soil Assessment is based on a visual appraisal of soil quality, presenting key soil and plant performance indicators in a scorecard format. Apart from texture, soil indicators are dynamic, providing a useful early warning of changes in soil condition. Senior lecturer in soil systems at UNE, Oliver Knox, demonstrates how easy it is to conduct this assessment, in a series of 5 short videos:
1. What is VSA?
2. Assessing texture
3. Assessing structure
4. Porosity, mottling and colour
5. Other soil attributes
In this video, Oliver explains the usefulness of this technique and the simple tools you need to conduct the assessment in the field.
