How do we approach and reexamine early American art? As American art historians and museum professionals broaden the canon for much-needed inclusivity, how does this work find visibility in museums and classrooms?
This virtual conversation recorded on October 12, 2021, explores how these questions guided the four scholars of the inaugural “Tyson Think Tank,” a short-term fellowship intensive that reckoned with early American art for three weeks in August and developed ideas and questions to guide further exploration.
In this roundtable-style lecture, Distinguished Scholar Carrie Rebora Barratt introduces the Tyson Think Tank by sharing her findings while looking anew at the portrait of “Mrs. Theodore Atkinson” Jr. by John Singleton Copley. She introduces fellows Wendy Castenell, Margarita Karasoulas, and Alexandra Letvin, who will each discuss their object-based investigation, new findings, and new approaches. The panel concludes with a short conversation on how to apply this method to other works of art.
