"... while he lived there was a king among us and now we are without”. Thomas Hardy, the author of many classic English novels, died on 11th January 1928. Virginia Woolf published this essay to mark the occasion. Woolf reflected on Hardy as an author and many of his novels, commenting honestly on what made Hardy different to all the other writers and what was the most important thing he left for us.
