F-2 – Japan’s Viper Killer
Developed from the F-16 but built to Japan’s unique strategic needs, the Mitsubishi F-2 stands as one of the most advanced multirole fighters in the Asia-Pacific. This video explores the origins, design, capabilities, and legacy of the F-2—often referred to as the “Viper Zero,” a nod to both its F-16 lineage and Mitsubishi’s WWII heritage.
In the early 1980s, Japan sought to revitalize its aviation industry with a homegrown fighter. What emerged was a complex co-development program with the United States, transforming the FS-X concept into the F-2. Produced jointly by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Lockheed Martin, the F-2 entered service in 2000 and remains a linchpin of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) in 2025.
