With honorary doctorate recipient Vinnie Colaiuta in attendance, graduating pianist Omarito pays homage to “City Nights,” composed by acclaimed British drummer and keyboardist Gary Husband, at the Berklee Commencement Concert in Agganis Arena. Made famous by the legendary guitarist Allan Holdsworth’s trio recording on Secrets, featuring Colaiuta on drums and Jimmy Johnson on bass, the piece was originally conceived by Husband at the keyboard. Omar’s performance returns “City Nights” to its keyboard roots while celebrating Colaiuta’s mind-bending drumming—a performance that remains a towering example of jazz fusion and a defining expression of his brilliance, innovation, and singular musicianship. Presented by members of the Class of 2026, the tribute is part of an interdisciplinary production bringing together 224 students representing 42 countries.
