Askeladd is an aul bastard, literally and figuratively. He’s cold, callous, and conniving, with a dash of charisma to rub salt into the wounds he inflicts and not a care in the world for the cruelty he lets loose across his countless conquests. And yet, I can’t help but root for the dood. Though, like any good villain, I hated him from the beginning, by the end I was desperate to see him win. His appeal is contradictory, and almost tragic to watch unfold. And today, I want to talk about what I think makes him work so well as a villain in Vinland Saga’s Viking drenched world . . .
