Vincent Lopez was born Dec. 30, 1898 in Brooklyn N.Y. Leader of a sweet-style band many years and was noted for piano pyrotechnics, especially on "Nola." He was taught music by his father. Studied for the priesthood for three years then attended business college and did office work, but soon earned a living as a cafe pianist. Formed band in 1918, played vaudeville, worked up to top hotels and theaters. Broadcast first dance band radio remote in 1921 from Newark, N.J. on WJZ. Long runs at Hotel Pennsylvania and Hotel St. Regis. Played Hotel Taft 27 years into the 1960s. His famous radio greeting: "Hello, everybody, Lopez speaking." Band in Broadway musicals Love Birds (1921), Greenwich Village Follies of 1924, Earl Carroll's Vanities of 1928, In movie "The Big Broadcast of 1932". Radio shows included Plough's Musical Courier 1934, Speed Show with Floyd Gibbons 1936, Nash Show starring Grace Moore 1937, Show of the Week with Buddy Clark 1940. Early 1950s own radio and TV show. Singers Betty and Marion Hutton with band late 1930s. Band in extravaganza Billy Rose's Aquacade at 1940 New York World's Fair. Also talented composer and lyricist.
