When it was announced in 2017 that a "warrior burial" assumed to be male was in fact female, it prompted a critical response from other academics such as Judith Jesch of the Norse and Viking ramblings blog. The team behind the original paper have now published a response to the critics titled "Viking warrior women? Reassessing Birka chamber grave Bj.581" in which they double down on their assertion the skeleton was a woman and warrior. But is it really as conclusive as they and the media have claimed?
