Phone vs Video Conspiracy
Why does YouTube viewing via an iPhone, Droid, Palm and Blackberry suck? Why is YouTube blowing its mobile strategy, and could the tech community be conspiring to develop an alternative? Is the app market really a democracy, or some slimy inbred elitist "new boys school" made up of Sequoia capital, angel investors, floundering VCs, TechCrunch, engadget, PCmag and PR firms?
Note- this is not an endorsement for MyU2BE, and I have no financial relationship with its bloated, round-headed Karl Pilkington founder, Renetto. But he stumbled into something that sucks less than Vloggerhead and for the life of me I can't figure this out. Why is one of my favorite apps (despite it's crappy name) is so delicious but not getting ranked by editors or "most popular" recommendations on iTunes. Instead the default app is a circa 2008, totally obsolete iTunes YouTube app... or the shit YouTube passes for a mobile app, which might as well be running on a 52K modem.
Before I call "foul play" on my blog (Willvideoforfood), I'm curious if you have any theories. Paul Robinette (aka Renetto) built it using his own money, and well more than 100,000 have purchased it. So who knows how many more people using the free app, which I guess has fewer features). Am I missing something? Or are there other killer apps as wonderful as Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies that are not getting press by design.
Try it out, use it to comment (it creates an optional myu2be watermark on your comment, and I promise to read and respond to all that have that). What am I missing? Do you have to sleep with Michael Arrington or have a PR/VC/angel connection to get a good app some press or a ranking? Am I missing any other killer apps that aren't part of the "new boys club"?
P.S. My sympathy to my cousins and their family who are mourning the loss of 12-year-old Abby Nalty (my cousin Morgan's beautiful daughter), who is being laid to rest tomorrow (Tuesday), Nov. 30. She died in an ATV accident in Mississippi on Sunday. Zipster08 expose of our phone conversation in 3 parts... we talk about YouTube, its 15-minutes of fame, and perseverance and reinvention. And he completely forgot to unlock one of our darkest series. When we all had to be on a webcast to learn the rules of being a YouTube partner, I was driving. So I begged him (and he happily did) login as me while I listened to the rules on a conference call... so I'd get credit. So basically I cheated on the "ham radio license test."
