Thousands gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square to remember Professor Jason Arday, days after his resignation from the University of Cambridge and his sudden death aged 41.

The vigil followed weeks of intense scrutiny over allegations surrounding Arday’s academic work and claims about his achievements. Arday denied plagiarism, while acknowledging mistakes in his doctoral work.

His family said he had faced a “campaign of harassment” and “sustained abuse”, while speakers at the vigil accused sections of the media of subjecting the Cambridge professor to a public takedown.

Diane Abbott told the crowd: “This was a vicious campaign, but it wasn't just a campaign against the professor, it was a campaign for all of us.”

Arday became Cambridge’s youngest Black professor in 2023.
