I have a JVC GR-SXM277UM camcorder, which can record on both VHS-C and S-VHS-C tapes. I wanted to see how much of a difference SP and EP speed makes, and how much difference does the S-VHS mode made, so I just made a quick comparison video. This version has the OSD of the camera turned on so you get an idea of which mode is being displayed, but in order they are:
0:00 EP
0:05 SP
0:10 S-VHS EP
0:15 S-VHS SP
I'm mostly surprised of how relatively little difference EP and SP made in comparison to S-VHS mode.
Also of note, the tape I used is an old regular TDK VHS-C tape that I mangled so the camera detected as an S-VHS-C tape (there's a tab that when absent, the camera detects it as an S-VHS-C tape, similar to how chrome/metal cassette tapes work), so the difference might not be truly representative. I'm going to repeat this test whenever I get my hands on a new old stock true S-VHS-C tape, I just took the chance of doing it since it's autumn right now here and there's a variety of natural colours out there today!
