This #VeteransDay, we honor those who have served our country—and the remarkable journeys they continue to take in service of others.
Meet Special Forces Medical Sergeant 18D Louis Guerra, a first-year medical student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. After 12 years as a Green Beret Medic in Special Forces, Lou chose to pursue medicine so he could become the physician providing the next level of care to the patients he once treated in the field.
Originally from Long Island, with a background in the restaurant industry, Louis shares powerful insights on finding purpose beyond military service—and how veterans can build meaningful careers while continuing to make a difference.
Louis is also featured on the latest episode of Mount Sinai’s podcast Road to Resilience, where he speaks candidly about his experiences on the ground in both Afghanistan and Ukraine, and how those moments shaped his path toward medicine. Head to the link in bio to listen.
At Mount Sinai, we are proud to count many veterans among our students, faculty, and staff—individuals who bring invaluable experience, discipline, and compassion to the practice of medicine. Today and every day, we thank them for their courage, service, and continued dedication to healing. #WeFindAWay
