Part 1: Interview with Collierville World War II Veteran, Thomas J. Shepherd (Tommy), who enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January, 1941. He was assigned to the 44th Bomb Group, working on the B24 “Liberators”, and served in Shipdham, England during the war. During the war,he was commissioned as a second lieutenant, and served as a gunner, flying nine combat missions between 1944-1945. After the war, he worked in Collierville before deciding to reenter the military in 1948. During his 25 years of service, he was a member of the 44th Bomb Group, the Second Air Division, and the Eighth Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1966. He served two combat tours in Korea. Shepherd is a founding member of the Collierville VFW, chartered on December 5, 1945.
