"Vestments of Cathay" or in simpler terms the traditional Chinese clothing, also known as a "Hanfu (漢服)", the mostly unchanging traditional garments of Chinese folk for several millennia that influenced the sinosphere for a similar length of time, was almost gone for good around the 1600s. Ming Dynasty China was at that point in a state of decline that led to their ultimate downfall against a Manchurian invasion, whom for the next several hundred years made it illegal to wear Chinese clothes, and are only allowed to don Manchurian garments unless they're a Buddhist monk or a Daoist priest! What we often label today as the Chinese dress (sometimes qipao or cheongsam) is a descendant and highly altered version of the Manchurian dress. A bit of food for thought!
