In this rail transport modeling video by Pilentum, we discover a very beautiful 1/35 scale model diorama built by Ilona and Bernd Rüger depicting narrow gauge field railways. The miniature world presents a carpenter’s workshop with a sawmill in the Ore Mountains in Germany. The history of woodworking is to be illustrated with this model railroad layout.

The wood from the sawmill is delivered to the carpentry workshop for further processing via light railways. The model railway layout consists of two areas that are connected to each other. In the left-hand section, there is a small beer garden with a brewery, the carpentry workshop and a water wheel that supplies the necessary energy for woodworking. In the right-hand section, there is a sawmill where large logs are prepared for production.

Vibrant colours, beautiful trees and bushes as well as slightly weathered buildings and rail vehicles, and finally a lot of loving details underline the beauty and the uniqueness of the model train diorama. This diorama of narrow gauge railways, also called trench railways or light railways, allows us to recognize the established standard for Gn15 model railroading: Gn15 is a rail modelling scale, using G scale 1/22.5 scale trains running on H0 gauge or OO gauge (16.5 mm / 0.65 in) track, representing minimum gauge railways.

Especially in Germany, there are so-called “Feldbahnen”, i.e. narrow gauge field railways, which are used for the transportation of agricultural, forestry and industrial goods. In the processing industry, these narrow-gauge railways once held an important role. But the use of simple and robust rail vehicles characterised everyday operations declined dramatically in the late 20th century, as their tasks have been taken on by lorries and electrically driven conveyor belts. This is why more and more railway modellers and model railroaders are building Gn15 model train dioramas for “Feldbahnen” in order to keep the fascination of minimum gauge railways alive.
