Sanskrit is a classical language of the Indo-Aryan branch, integral to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It developed in South Asia after its predecessor languages arrived from the northwest in the late Bronze Age. As a link language in ancient South Asia, it became influential in Southeast, East, and Central Asia, affecting the formal vocabularies of these regions. Sanskrit includes several Old Indo-Aryan varieties, with Vedic Sanskrit being the oldest, dating back to 1500-1200 BCE. Classical Sanskrit, a standardized form, emerged in the mid-1st millennium BCE.
