As open hostilities between India and Pakistan began on 01 September 1965, an Indian ground unit requested air support. The request was granted and 26 Indian aircraft were assigned to provide it. The type to lead the effort was the most obsolete combat aircraft in Indian service - de Havilland Vampire. Introduced to RAF service immediately after WW2, by mid 1960s the airplane's usefulness was very limited. It could be used for ground support but only where air superiority was achieved. In this case, Indian Vampires were not provided with any fighter escort. They would have to face a superior enemy on their own.
