The 4 valses oubliées were composed during the last 10 years of Liszt's life. Contrary to the contemplative and morbid nature of his other late works, the valses oubliées along with the 4 mephisto waltzes represent the earlier virtuosic and passionate elements of his style. Out of the four waltzes, only the first one is commonly played.
