The Calgary Sikh Community generously presented another beautiful Vaisakhi Parade on May 13.They also contributed funds to the City of Calgary to enable free transit for the whole city for the day, so that all could attend without problem.
Nagar Kirtan is a colorful procession where some of the participants sing Shabads (Holy hymns) and perform Gatka (traditional martial arts). The Sikh Community also set up Langar (Holy Kitchen) inside and outside the Gurudwara, offering free vegetarian meals to all attendees without distinction of religion, caste, gender, economic status or ethnicity.
Following the parade, there was a festive event at Prairie Winds Park .
This event is organized annually by the Sikh Community and is a free family friendly event. There was water and treats also generously handed out all along the parade route. Note that many of the Sikh marchers were walking barefoot. "It is a common practice among Sikhs to walk bare feet when ever they take the Guru Granth Sahib ji from one place to another . This tradition is followed regardless of weather conditions ( cold , ice , snow , rain or hot burning sand ). It is commonly seen on TV during when they parade the Guru Granth Sahib ji on the streets, this is referred to as “ Nagar Kirtan“.
