Why Failure is Actually Your Friend (Even When It Doesnt Feel Like It) | Ep 74
updated
One move, three benefits โ your quads, core, AND shoulders are all going to feel this one!
Here's how it works:
Start in a bear plank โ hands and toes on the floor, knees just hovering off the ground. Push your hips back toward your heels, then drive forward and press out into a full plank. That's it! Simple, brutal, effective. ๐
Why you'll love to hate it:
๐ฅ Serious quad burnout from that hip-back push
๐ช Core and shoulder stability work built right in
โก No equipment needed โ just you vs. the floor
Perfect for tacking onto the end of a leg day or throwing into a bodyweight circuit!

Two weeks, a broken furnace, and a content creation marathon later โ I am SO ready to get back to training! In this vlog, I'm bringing you along for my return to the gym as I kick off a fresh stability endurance block and start building back toward my heavy lifts. Let's GOOO!
Here's the fun part: this isn't just winging it. I'm following the same structured approach I use with all of my clients โ NASM's OPT model โ which means starting with cardio circuits, mobility work, and stability before ramping up into hypertrophy and strength training. It's one of my absolute favorite ways to train, and the results (for me AND my clients) speak for themselves!
In this video I talk about:
โ Why a stability endurance block is the best way to ease back into training
โ How the OPT model works and why I've built all my programs around it
โ The magic of pacing yourself so you actually WANT to come back tomorrow
โ My leg day workout breakdown (hack squats, kickbacks, leg extensions & curls)
โ Why watching others train is genuinely one of the best motivation hacks out there
If you're ready to build strength the smart, sustainable way, my Body Sculpt Program is open now โ both the 90-day and 6-month versions! Apply for one-on-one coaching at form.typeform.com/to/GVU3nzAe and let's get to work!

You can't pour from an empty cup, and building your foundation through movement and nourishment helps you show up stronger - for yourself and for others.
In This Episode:
โ Why struggling with healthy habits right now is completely valid

If you're used to hypertrophy training (lighter weight, higher reps, chasing the burn), heavy lifting is going to feel completely differentโand that's normal.
Here's why:
In hypertrophy training, you feel your muscles burning because they're working for an extended period. You're creating metabolic stress and fatigue over 8-12+ reps.
But with heavy lifting? No burn. And that's because you're not asking your muscles to perform for as long.
Heavy lifting is about:
- High concentrated load in a short time
- Maximum muscle recruitment all at once
- Explosive bursts of energy to move big weight
- 1-6 reps instead of 8-15
It's a different stimulus, a different adaptation, and a totally different feeling. If you're not feeling "the burn" during heavy sets, that doesn't mean you're doing it wrongโit means you're training for strength, not just size.
What surprised you most when you started lifting heavy? ๐

Struggling to stay on track with your fitness goals during the holidays? Here's exactly how to navigate this season without losing progress (or your sanity). ๐
The holidays are tough when you're trying to lose weight or build muscle. Shorter days, treats everywhere, and social pressure to overeat can derail even the most dedicated fitness journey. As a personal trainer with 10+ years of experience, I'm sharing the exact strategies I use with my clients to help them stay on trackโor strategically take a breakโduring the holiday season.
๐ TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 - Why the holidays are so challenging for fitness
2:52 - Step 1: Know yourself and your triggers
6:13 - Planning for holiday treats and parties
8:05 - Workout strategies when it's dark outside
9:02 - The healthy plate model for social gatherings
11:55 - Setting boundaries (saying no is okay!)
13:01 - Step 3: Give yourself grace
16:57 - Fat Loss Transformation program info
19:32 - Final thoughts and wrap-up
๐ฏ KEY TAKEAWAYS:
โ Know your specific holiday challenges (seasonal depression, treats, social pressure)
โ Make a strategic plan for parties and gatherings
โ Use the healthy plate model when you can't track calories
โ Don't starve all day to "save calories" - this backfires!
โ Remember: "no" is a complete sentence
โ You don't need to be in a fat loss phase forever
โ The 80/20 rule applies - a few indulgent days won't undo months of progress
๐ช READY TO TRANSFORM YOUR FITNESS?
I'm currently accepting clients for my Fat Loss Transformation program (90-day and 6-month options available). I'll teach you:
โข How many calories YOUR body needs to burn fat and keep it off
โข How to build a sustainable exercise routine that fits your life
โข How to adjust your approach based on your current season of life

There's a difference between muscle fatigue and your body screaming at you to stop. Here are the red flags that mean you need to stop your set IMMEDIATELY:
๐ STOP if you feel:
- Sharp, acute pain
- Popping, clicking, or grinding in your joints
- Shooting pain, numbness, or tingling (nerve issues)
- Dizziness, vision changes, or lightheadedness
- Chest pain or difficulty breathing (seek medical attention NOW)
These aren't signs you need to "push through." They're your body telling you something is wrongโeither with your technique, the weight you're using, or something more serious.
The goal is to build strength, not destroy your body. If you experience any of these, stop the set, reassess your form, reduce the weight, or get checked out by a professional.
Your long-term progress depends on staying healthy. Listen to your body.
Have you ever ignored a warning sign and regretted it? What happened? ๐
#SafetyFirst #StrengthTraining #InjuryPrevention #FitnessCoach #LiftingSafety #TrainingTips #GymSafety #StrengthCoach #SmartTraining #FitnessEducation
Yes, you need to push yourself. But if you're experiencing these signs, you've crossed the line into counterproductive territory:
๐จ You're pushing TOO hard if:
- You're failing lifts frequently (not just occasionally)
- Your technique completely breaks down on your last rep
- You feel extreme fatigue after trainingโcan't function the rest of the day
- All you want to do is bed rot, eat snacks, and watch TV after the gym
The reality: Frequent failure and extreme fatigue aren't badges of honorโthey're signs you need to adjust.
What to do:
- Drop the weight, reduce your reps, or end your sets 1-2 reps before complete failure. Build up gradually to where you can lift that weight with solid technique.
Training hard means challenging yourself within your capacity. Training smart means knowing when to pull back so you can actually recover and grow stronger.
How do you know when you've pushed too far? ๐
#StrengthTraining #Overtraining #TrainingTips #FitnessCoach #GymAdvice #RecoveryMatters #SmartTraining #StrengthCoach #ProgressiveOverload #TrainingBalance
Think you're lifting heavy? Here are the signs you're actually leaving gains on the table:
๐จ You're not pushing hard enough if:
- Your sets feel comfortable and controlled the whole way through
- You don't feel challenged or fatigued after your workout
- You're not mentally locking in before heavy sets
- You know you could easily do more reps or add more weight
- Your bar speed stays the same from first rep to last
That last one is keyโif the bar isn't slowing down by your final reps, you're not creating enough stimulus for growth.
The fix? Add 5-10 pounds. Add 1-2 more reps. Make yourself work for it.
Progressive overload isn't comfortable. If it feels easy, it's not building strength.
Be honest: Are you really pushing yourself, or just going through the motions? ๐
#StrengthTraining #ProgressiveOverload #TrainingTips #GymTips #LiftingHeavy #FitnessCoach #WorkoutMotivation #StrengthCoach #TrainingHarder #GymAdvice
Heavy lifting isn't just physicalโit's a mental challenge. Every time I approach a heavy set, there's a voice in my head asking: "Can I really move this weight?"
And honestly? That doubt is completely normal.
Having a healthy respect (even a little fear) for heavy weight means you're taking it seriously. It means you're present and focused, which is exactly what you need to lift safely and effectively.
Here's the truth: You won't know what you can't lift until you actually try.
That's the whole point of progressive overload. You show up, you respect the weight, you manage the doubt, and you find out what you're capable of.
The mental demand is real. The doubt is normal. And pushing through it is what makes you strongerโboth physically and mentally.
What goes through your head before a heavy set? Let me know ๐
#HeavyLifting #StrengthTraining #MindsetMatters #LiftingMotivation #StrengthCoach #ProgressiveOverload #GymMindset #FitnessJourney #TrainingTips #MentalStrength
The heavier you lift, the harder it is to feel what's actually happening. That's why filming your lifts is one of the smartest training tools you can use.
What to do:
- Record from the side (essential)
- Add a front angle if possible
- Review between sets, not after your workout
- Watch for bar speed slowing or technique shifts
This immediate feedback loop helps you correct form in real-time, prevent injury, and actually lift MORE weight by fixing weaknesses before they become habits.
Your phone is the cheapest form coach you'll ever have. Use it.
What's one cue you give yourself when reviewing your lifts? Drop it below ๐

I don't care if you "only have 2 reps left" - those sloppy reps are doing more harm than good.
Here's what bad reps actually do:
โ Reinforce poor movement patterns
โ Increase injury risk exponentially
โ Train the WRONG muscles
โ Waste your time and effort
Every rep you do with compromised form is practice. And you're practicing the wrong thing.
What form breakdown looks like:
- Your back starts rounding
- You're using momentum instead of muscle
- Your joints are shifting out of position
- You can't control the eccentric
- You're compensating with other muscles
The second you notice ANY of these - the set is over. Drop the weight, reset, and do it right.
"But I need to push to failure!"
No. You need to push to technical failure. The point where you can't maintain form is your true stopping point.
Quality reps build muscle. Garbage reps build injury patterns.
Your ego will recover faster than your torn rotator cuff will.
Drop the weight. Fix the form. Build actual strength.
Comment ๐ฏ if you've been guilty of this!
#formcheck #fitnesstips #injuryprevention #trainingtips #workoutadvice #properform #gymtips #strengthtraining #technique #safetyfirst
Sounds weird, but hear me out.
During high volume training, don't just go through the motions - actually PAY ATTENTION to what's working.
Try this next workout:
- Feel a muscle contract? Name it.
- Feel a stretch? Identify where.
- Notice the burn? What muscle is it in?
This isn't just some woo-woo mind-muscle connection BS - it's called proprioception, and it's a game-changer.
Here's what happens when you develop this skill:
โ Better exercise technique automatically
โ Fewer injuries from compensation patterns
โ More muscle activation where you want it
โ Faster progress because you're actually working the right muscles
Most people are just moving weight from point A to point B. You need to be FEELING and CONTROLLING the muscles that are supposed to be working.
High volume training is the perfect time to practice this because you're doing more reps and sets - more opportunities to tune in and learn your body.
Stop mindlessly repping. Start consciously connecting.
Your gains will thank you.
Drop a ๐ง if you're going to try this!

Here's the breakdown:
RPE 7 = 3 reps left in the tank
RPE 8 = 2 reps in reserve
RPE 9 = 1 rep left
RPE 10 = True failure (0 reps left)
Why this matters:
When your program says "RPE 8" and you're actually hitting RPE 10 every set, you're overtraining. When you think you're at RPE 9 but you actually have 4 reps left, you're undertraining.
Most people are guessing. And guessing = inconsistent gains.
Use this as your reference:
Can you do 3 more reps with good form? RPE 7
Maybe 2 more? RPE 8
Definitely only 1 more? RPE 9
Absolutely nothing left? RPE 10
Learning to accurately gauge this is a skill that takes practice, but once you dial it in, your programming becomes WAY more effective.
Stop leaving gains on the table because you don't understand the numbers.
Save this for your next workout ๐
Comment your usual RPE!

Here's why: Your muscles need recovery between sets to recharge so you can lift heavy enough to actually trigger growth. If you're rushing through workouts without rest, you're leaving gains on the table.
Rest = recharge = better performance = more muscle ๐ช
Stop feeling guilty about resting between sets. That's literally WHERE the magic happens.

Sounds amazing, right? But here's the catch... ๐
HIIT is HARD on your body. More than 2-3x/week = burnout, injury risk, and poor recovery.
The smart approach:
2-3 HIIT sessions per week MAX
Fill the rest with moderate cardio
Listen to your body's recovery signals
Work smarter AND safer. Efficiency doesn't mean doing HIIT every day ๐ช

Here's what most people don't realize: You can hit your fitness goals with JUST moderate intensity cardio.
150-300 mins/week = heart health + fat loss + improved fitness
That's it. No fancy HIIT required. No punishing yourself daily.
Translation: 30-60 mins, 5 days/week of walking, biking, dancing, or any activity where you can still talk but you're breathing harder.
Simple. Sustainable. Effective ๐ช

Ready to lift heavier weights? In this video, I'm breaking down exactly how to know if you're pushing hard enough during heavy lifting workoutsโwithout getting injured.
Heavy lifting feels COMPLETELY different from high-volume training. You won't get that familiar muscle burn, failure happens suddenly, and it's way harder to gauge your effort. I'm sharing everything you need to know about training maximal strength safely and effectively.
๐ฏ IN THIS VIDEO:
โข Why heavy lifting feels different from muscle-building training
โข How to recognize when you're approaching muscle failure
โข The difference between motor unit recruitment in heavy vs. high-volume lifting
โข Red flags that mean you need to stop immediately
โข Signs you're pushing too hard (or not hard enough)
โข How to use your one rep max to guide training intensity
โข Essential safety protocols for heavy lifting
โข Why recording your lifts is a game-changer
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT: Heavy lifting is for intermediate lifters with at least 6-12 months of consistent training experience. Make sure you have solid technique in higher rep ranges before attempting maximal strength work.
๐ TRAINING INTENSITY GUIDELINES:
Muscle Growth: 70-85% of your 1RM
Maximal Strength: 85-95% of your 1RM

โ Common mistake: Weight drifting over shoulders with elbows flared out
โ Correct form: Keep weight stacked directly over elbows throughout the movement
This simple fix will:
* Protect your elbow joints from strain
* Save energy by reducing tricep overwork
* Make your presses more effective
PRO TIP: At the bottom โ hands over elbows. At the top โ weight over shoulders. Same rule applies for overhead press!

โ When knee cave is actually a problem
โ How to activate your glutes properly

Have extra time? Stack these:
โ Lat rows (foundation)
โ Back flies (posture)
โ Rear delt rows (shoulder health)
โ Incline dumbbell Ys
โ Lat pullovers

๐ฏ KEY POINTS:
* Poor ankle flexibility forces heels up at bottom position
* Insufficient hip hinge or knee bend can also cause this
* Keep your center of gravity stable throughout the movement
* Your bodyweight should stay in the same spot - no drifting forward or back

Butt wink happens when your hips tilt under at the bottom of a squat, putting dangerous strain on your lumbar spine. This common squat mistake is usually caused by tight hips and hamstrings.
๐ Key takeaway: Stop your squat BEFORE butt wink occursโeven if you can't go parallel. Better to squat shallow with proper form than deep with poor form!
โ Solution: Work on hip and hamstring mobility to improve your squat depth safely.

I only track when I'm trying to change something specific. Here's the truth: after tracking for a while, you develop an intuitive sense of calories and macros in your favorite foods.
The goal? Eat intuitively within your goals WITHOUT constant tracking. That's where sustainable fitness actually happens ๐ช

* Improved body positioning awareness
* Safer, more effective workouts
* Faster strength gains
Perfect for beginners learning squat form or anyone looking to improve their technique!
