V1 Flying Bombs over London: The British Response

On 13 June 1944, the first V-1 struck London next to the railway bridge on Grove Road, Mile End, which now carries this English Heritage blue plaque. Eight civilians were killed in the blast. In today's show, we look at the Civil Defence response to this new aerial threat.
Steve Hunnisett comes from a Merchant Navy background, but since 2015 he has been part of Blitz Walkers blitzwalkers.co.uk leading tour groups through WWII sites in the UK. Steve has guided over two hundred walks across London and recent clients include RAF High Wycombe, various British Army and Army Reserve groups, The Royal Netherlands Air Force, Charlton Manor School, Pardes House School, Westminster Cathedral Choir School and the usual array of family groups from around the globe. Steve also appeared on RTE in the Irish version of the popular TV show "Who Do You Think You Are?" in the episode featuring Pat Shortt. Steve is also a Guest Lecturer for the University of Westminster, and is a regular contributor to "Britain at War" magazine as well as other periodicals and publications. He is currently working on a wartime history of Greenwich & Woolwich during the wartime years.
