I consider Sonic Pocket Adventure second only to the Genesis/Sega CD games.3. Bonk was also on the Game Boy. In fact, many of these games also had Game Boy versions. 4. I have been exploring the Commodore Amiga a lot in the past year. I want to do a video on it but I have to confess I am finding many of its games to play significantly worse than expected. The deeper I go the lower my opinion goes of it. I'm not sure if it is the fact I never played the games when I was younger or if time has made me less forgiving. 5. Game Boy music always surprises me. It's amazing how good that little chip can sound. 6. Most of these games are super easy to emulate with something like Retroarch. Just download the core, get your game, and go. 7. I found a ton of games that would fit into this type of video for many of Sega's properties. Perhaps I'll focus on some of them if there is a demand for a part 2.

Some regions of the world didn't get this version until the second half of 1995. 3. Contrary to popular belief the Genesis and Sega versions were not the same game. Both were developed and published by different companies.4. The SNES version of this is my least favorite. The tiny characters look terrible and that Earthquake sprite is laughable in its smallness. 5. The Sega Game Gear also got a port of this. 6. Samurai Shodown is known as Samurai Spirits in Japan. 7. It really is a shame that the developers attempted no scaling at all here. Like I said in the video, even a zoom in at the start of the match would have been something. Even the PC Engine versions of Neo Geo games attempted something special in this regard without any special hardware.

I really irritated everyone in the house for months until I got a good pair of headphones with a very long cord. 6. The SNES was the first system I saw via S-Video. Changed my life in an instant. 7. I consider Super Castlevania IV to be the pinnacle of SNES music.8. This video was a nightmare to get posted. I ran into copyright claims on the music and I uploaded the wrong edit before this final version. 5 tries in total.

I put the capture info at the opening so you understand these comparisons can and do look different based on many factors. Your capture settings are a big one, as are things like resolution when capturing emulation from programs like MAME. Since I do not own tons of original arcade PCBs, unfortunately, I have to use emulation. In my current setup, I capture it straight from my arcade machine, which has a 4:3 1280x1024 monitor in it. 2. Primal Rage had a few issues in MAME where sometimes the fighters would land improperly. 3. In the OutRun segment the Saturn version is running in its smooth mode. 4. Many of the Saturn games look a bit darker than the arcade footage. That's just the settings of my capture equipment vs. the raw capture of the emulation. 5. I have already chosen the games for part 4 - a whopping 16 games in total. 6. I used the Japanese Saturn version of The House of the Dead in that segment. That's why the blood is green. 7. The music in the final comparison of Revolution X is from the Genesis version. I wanted to avoid any copyright issues.

They went under after these two releases. 6. Acclaim also did movie games for stuff like Stargate, Judge Dredd, and Batman Forever. I feel this was the best of the bunch. 7. I was shocked that some Sega franchises like Phantasy Star have moved paltry numbers over the years. I feel any hope of Sega returning to a traditional release of that is long gone. 5. One thing that hurt many of Sega's classic franchises was the fact that the hardware it was on wasn't popular. Games on the Saturn, no matter how good, simply didn't have the installed base to sell big numbers. 6. Sonic's most recent mainline entry, Sonic Frontiers, has moved some 4 million units since its release.7. Sega allows Atlus to operate mostly on its own so I did not include the sales from its games. Atlus even publishes many of its game related franchises. I know it's still a subsidiary but I wanted to keep it separate here.8. I also kept separate studios that Sega only acquired in recent years. That's why franchises like Two Point Hospital aren't here. I wanted the games in this video to have either been created by Sega or owned by Sega for a significant time.

Sunsoft also published the massive disappointment, Blaster Master 2. 5. I was not a fan of the vehicle based stages in this title. They are short but cheap as hell.6. It was pointed out that the story in Zero takes place after Aero 2. I went back to verify and it seems that is correct. The ending of Aero 2 directly references the events that start Zero here.

It still amazes me that some of these came out as late as they did. You expected it to an extent because the SNES was 2 years after the Genesis, but with the new generation started, Nintendo hung on to its 16-bit throne as long as it could. 5. Check out the first Super Turrican as well. It's pretty good itself. 6. Ken Griffey Jr's Winning Run has a nasty pitching AI. It does not make it easy, especially in the games with the better teams.

The European version of part 2 allows you to pick the same fighters in co-op using a code.10. There are a few differences between regions in part 2. Some mild censorship is there for instance. Mr X smokes a cigar in the Japanese version, and you can see Blaze's underwear during her attacks. 11. There was a pack in of part 2 with the Sega Genesis called the "Fighting System" briefly. It's quite rare today to find it complete. 12. As far as I know, the PAL releases of part 3 had all the same changes as the US version. 13. I always believed that Sega should have done a special Sega CD or 32X edition of these as well. It was such a missed opportunity. 14. Max is missing from part 3 entirely. 15. The Japanese version of part 3 has more difficulty settings open by default. There is a Very Hard mode that is quite nasty.

The System 16 hit the arcade nearly 3 years before Capcom's CPS and nearly 5 years before the Neo Geo. 4. I often wonder what the Genesis would have been like had its VDP been more like the System 16. That sprite scaling could have made a world of difference. 5. There were more System 16 titles than I covered here. More sports, puzzle, and Japanese-centric material.6. Most of System 18 games are 3 and 4 player co-op. 7. Most System 18 games still have no modern console versions. 8. Laser Ghost had an energy gun that put you in mind of the Ghostbusters proton glider. I'm surprised Sega didn't get sued.9. Despite being nothing like the arcade, Outrunners on the Genesis actually has a decent soundtrack. I use it here in the closing segment. 10. Outrunners is one of my favorite racing games ever. I first saw it at a summer camping retreat when I was 18. I dumped many credits into it that weekend.11. I mentioned multiplayer numerous times during the System 32 segment because most of these games had it and the entire balance of the gameplay was designed around it. The more people you have often leads to a much better experience. 12. I always thought the Sega CD would have been a great place for many of the System 32 games. There would indeed have been a lot of concessions and cutbacks, but I feel many would have still been well worth the effort. Especially since the Sega CD had so few games that really showed off its scaling features.

I never understood why Sega just didn't use a video solution like the 32X employed to get more color out of the Sega CD. I mean even if it was just another 60+ colors it would have helped immensely. 4. Funny enough, Japan did not share Sega of America's fascination with FMV. Very few came to Japan for the Mega CD and what did show up, sold terribly. 5. The FMV craze didn't even make it into the 32-bit generation very far. By the time Saturn and PSX got going, most companies had completely turned their noses up to it. 6. I used Bram Stoker's Dracula to illustrate a traditional gameplay type that used video as its backgrounds. that game sucked, but I thought the idea was sound. 7. Yeah, I know how to say Kamen. I pronounced it like (R)amen for so long it just kinda stuck.

Captured via the Mega SG. 2. You'll notice a few of the captures has the life star spinning. This was an invincibility that I somehow activated. No kidding. I never put in any invincibility code or did the stage 2 trick. It cut itself on automatically during one of the later stages. No clue if this was because of the Mega SG or what. It stayed on till the final stage. 3. There are lots of little differences between the SNES and Genesis versions. Details in the backgrounds, color changes, and the SNES has little load times between deaths. The 3rd person driving segment is missing from the SNES, and the SNES first person stage is much shorter. Largely they are the same, however. 4. This was also available for the PC and Gameboy, though I have played neither. 5. I wasn't kidding about a Saturn version. Use that pre-rendered animation and have the Saturn put up polygon backgrounds and this would have been a hit I feel. A real missed opportunity. 6. The PAL version is region locked, so if you want access to the password system, be sure you have a way around it.

There are numerous modern alternatives with enhancements. 4. While this boasted compatibility with Sonic 2 and 3, it did not add any meaningful additions when used with Sonic 1. It can be hooked up to randomize Blue Sphere stages, but I can't say I thought much of that. 5. Sonic & Knuckles was released in Japan less than a month before the Saturn launched there. It remains extremely rare due to its low print run. 6. Because of the later release, it came in the dreaded paper boxes for the Genesis. It is one of the few games I own that is cart only.7. I said Sonic was faster than Knuckles in the video. This was perhaps the wrong way to describe that. Sonic has a larger jump which I always felt made him feel quicker in the air. As someone pointed out in the comments, Sonic and Knuckles run at the same speed, otherwise.

The comparison used Supermodel, the PC emulator. 3. I had numerous issues making this. Because I captured so long, it appears that my HD60X decided to overheat and include a number of graphical glitches in the footage. I had nearly 4 hours of total gameplay, but only about half that as usable video. You will catch a moment of that corruption during Sonic The Fighters. 4. Daytona 2 Battle on the Edge remains an unported gem. That first track is still my favorite in that game. 5. If you are a newbie, try using the black hard car with the automatic transmission until you get used to the tracks. Then slowly practice your manual transmission on the first track until you get a feel for the braking.

The Mega SD just kept failing to load the match. 2. If I knew the game well and played it a lot, I used the simulation mode for a few of these. That's where the CPU plays itself. It helped with capture time. Most of these did not, however. 3. The Sega CD was truly awful at FMV. That low color count just made everything look so much worse than it should have. 4. Honestly, after playing these, I kind of just wish Sega had ported all their cartridge sports series with better sound effects. At this point, that would have been infinitely better than what we got. 5. I really was ready to write off NFL Football Trivia Challenge. So much so that I didn't even realize I had chosen the Bears in the setup screen. You'll notice that when I score.

In some ways, I found the Contra mode to be the easiest way to play this. Especially after you know the stages well. 5. Kai believes that a digital ROM option devalues their work. They want the full fat physical experience with their titles.6. I didn't think many of you cared, but this is based on a release for the MSX computer from a few years back. It's enhanced here in every way. Stage layouts and boss battles are different. The gameplay is also much faster.

Even Sega Rally 3 is running the full PC based code.2. I used the PC version of Revo for all the footage of that game. If you look closely, you'll see the frame hitching. 3. Teknoparrot will also play other Sega arcade games that were PC based. 4. The PSP version of Revo really does have some brutal load times. Upwards of 30 seconds in some cases. I used a component cable for the capture. 5. Sega Rally Online Arcade is running on the PS3 for this footage. I have no clue if it does it on the Xbox 360, but here there is slowdown and frame tearing at various times. 6. I did not show the GBA or N-Gage Sega Rally games because, well, they aren't very good. 7. I felt the title worked in many ways. Sega Rally in general is mostly forgotten today, Sega Rally Revo and its spin offs are forgotten, and Sega itself has fallen from its perch as a dominant arcade maker.

Sonic Adventure was never going to be part of this episode. While I do agree it has aged rather poorly, it by no means should be on a worst of list. 4. Castlevania 64 goes down as one of my biggest letdowns ever. 5. Metal Slug 3D was never released outside of Japan. I guess even the people that made it knew it was garbage. 6. Bubsy 3D wasn't the last of the polygon games in that series. More were done just a few years ago for modern platforms.

A few arcade games are MAME footage. 2. After Burner Climax is the PS3 version. 3. Outrun 2 is the 360 Online version. 4. Many of these have modern, or at least more modern, releases other than their original console versions. 5. After Bruner did have a game called Sky Target appear in 3D, but that was more a spinoff than a direct sequel. 6. To date, I believe the only thing that saved the N64 from being a massive failure, was Nintendo's first party games.7. I needed to use the GTA3 footage carefully. There are so many copyright pitfalls with that title, I had to be quite picky. It's why I ended it with a cinematic.8. Final Fantasy VII was considered for this episode. One of my considerations was not just that the game have polygon elements to its visuals but that the gameplay itself takes advantage of the 3D world. Final Fantasy VII is mostly played with polygon characters against 2D backdrops. I felt Shining Force III was a much better example of a real jump to 3D.

Redesigning things into one VDP would have been complicated, which is why I pushed the launch back a year. It would have been more complex than simply mixing VDP 2's abilities in, as the Saturn Control Unit also housed the DSP, which I want moved directly into the new VDP and have its own cache of memory to work with. 2. This path likely would have changed many of the Saturn releases you know, and in some cases, love. No change would come without sacrifice. 3. You'll notice I put a larger emphasis on Sega of America moving over well known IPs from the Genesis. This is an important part of the plan because I believe a big issue with Saturn was its lack of connection to previous Sega properties. 4. One SH-2 could perhaps be seen as too slow, but I do not believe so. With the DSP directly assisting our new VDP, we should actually see some improvement in polygon rendering. The Master/Slave setup of the original SH-2 design was hamstrung by a single shared bus, so I feel any extra power afforded the Saturn due to this setup only helped the most talented developers programming in Assembly. We need a console accessible by all developers and one CPU accomplishes this. 5. You may ask why not go deeper. Why not go into the later life of the Saturn with changes. I felt I didn't need to because these changes would have put things on a path to a library that was already incredible. Saturn's games in 96 and 97 would have begot more sequels and the better sales would have secured more 3rd party support. 6. Videos like these are for the sake of conversation. In no way do I feel this would have been an easy fight, nor do I begrudge the folks who originally handled it. Business can be tough and there are often roadblocks and circumstances that completely derail you. Reality is always significantly harder to succeed in.7. Though this was the final 2D game in the series, there was a 3D reboot in 2010. It was not well received. 3. This game can be tough. To see the better ending, I'd say the hardest in the series by a mile. 4. Should you do well enough on time, you can access the "Strange Zone". This is an area that allows you to score some extra lives. There are different Strange Zones and they have different monsters in them. Some are easy while some are very difficult. 5. There are a number of different endings. Those passwords really come in handy when trying to see them all.

I'd say given the timeline, it was either my Sega CD or Turbo CD that caused me to sell it.4. There is no run 'n' gun section because most of the games that I considered easily fit into other genres. There are a handful but they all pretty much pale in comparison next to Contra and Super C. For this reason, I didn't want a winner by merit of simply existing.

While I have defeated this long ago, it frustrated me so badly for this review I stopped playing it on stage 6-2. The cheapness of the enemies wore down my patience. 4. There were other versions of Dick Tracy made for various consoles and computers. All of them were different from this. 5. The movie itself was not a huge hit. While Disney advertised it hard that year, it pretty much just broke even. A big letdown after the success of Batman.

Awful beat'em up with terrible balancing issues and F tier visuals. 4. Batman Arkham Knight was a good game as well but I prefer the first two games in that series. 5. I have always thought that Batman would make an excellent RPG. Give it realtime combat and a comic book story and it'd have a ton of potential.6. Batman Returns for the SNES was a great game but it needed a 2 player mode. Not sure who could have been the second player - perhaps they could have simply done a different colored Batman. 7. You'll be amused to see that among the worst games, Acclaim is yet again a heavy contributor. That company really did suck a lot of the time.

This game still looks and plays remarkably well. I ended up with 3 hours of capture footage I played it so long past what I needed for the review. 4. This was released before both the 1MB and 4MB RAM carts. 5. I think this showed that even without the RAM carts, the Saturn could have done Vampire Savior and Zero 3 quite well on its own. 6. The PAL release supposedly has additional settings for color customizations. I've never played it to see it for myself. 7. The load times are quite short. You might expect them to be awful but the Saturn actually handles this area far better than you may think. 8. There are also extra turbo settings hidden away via a code. They make the game so fast it's damn near unplayable.

I supported the PlayStation all the way up until the PS2 launched. 3. NFL GameDay remained the platforms most popular NFL title until around 2001 when Madden began to pass it in sales and quality. 4. Symphony of the Night and Resident Evil saw ports to the Saturn, but I played them far more on the PlayStation. 5. I don't feel the Saturn would have had any real trouble doing any of these games had a strong developer been attached to them, but as something like Symphony of the Night indicated, that would not have always been the case. 6. The PlayStation was on the market and supported with new releases for more than a decade. It's longevity was unreal considering this was Sony's first console attempt.

A-Wave did a number of fishing games including Sea Bass Fishing from the ST-V Titan/Saturn. 3. T's Music Co. did the sound for the Sega CD version. They did a number of soundtracks for Sega over the years and across numerous platforms. High-profile examples include Sakura Wars, Space Channel 5, and Blood Will Tell. 4. This was included on the Sega Genesis Mini 2.5. The color hack for this doesn't lessen the grainy look but does bring it more in line with the arcade colors. 6. I can only assume that this port is the reason why Sega did not make an original Streets of Rage for the Sega CD.
