FROM THE ARCHIVES | Evaluating In-Flight Weather (1990) Air Safety Institute 2022-08-12 | Pulled from the AOPA Air Safety Institute archives, this video places the viewer in the cockpit of two general aviation aircraft— one on a VFR flight, the other on an IFR flight. It follows the pilots’ weather decisions during their respective flights. Did you know? The AOPA Air Safety Foundation (now Air Safety Institute) celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2000. Coinciding with the anniversary, was a safety outreach called “Project V” (for Video). Some 35,000 video tapes were sent free to newly minted private pilots and instrument pilots. The video Lost and Crossed was sent to pilots who had recently passed their FAA private pilot checkride and addressed the common fears of getting lost and getting "crossed up" in crosswinds. Weather Decision Making went to freshly rated instrument pilots, who often would feel unsure about their ability to find and use weather information.

Early Analysis: N76075 - Cessna 140 Crash at STOL Competition May 20, 2022 Wayne, NE Air Safety Institute 2022-05-24 | ASI Senior Vice President, Richard McSpadden, CFII, MEI, SES, MES, former Commander/Flight Leader for the USAF Thunderbirds, provides early analysis of an accident on May 20, 2022 when a Cessna 140 crashed at the MayDay STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) event taking place that weekend in Wayne, Nebraska. No one on the ground was injured. Sadly, pilot Tom Dafoe, the only occupant in the aircraft, died in the accident. Winds were too strong on that day to run the STOL Drag competition, a test of speed and precision measured by time and combined takeoff and landing distance. Dafoe and other pilots decided to fly a traditional STOL Demonstration where pilots fly a typical box pattern keeping the takeoff and landing distance as short as possible. It appeared Dafoe’s Cessna 140 made an S-turn for spacing behind a Zenith 701 to compensate for the Cessna’s faster speed leading to a stall/spin accident.In Early Analysis: N76075, the AOPA Air Safety Institute makes a preliminary assessment of the accident, addressing notable portions of the tragic flight and highlighting areas the NTSB will likely investigate to determine a probable cause.
Early Analysis: N8845Z – Cessna 172 Forced Landing on Bridge May 14, 2022 Miami, FL Air Safety Institute 2022-05-18 | ASI Executive Director, Richard McSpadden, CFII, MEI, SES, MES, former Commander/Flight Leader for the USAF Thunderbirds, provides early analysis of an accident on May 14, 2022 when a Cessna 172 Skyhawk made an emergency landing on the Haulover Inlet Bridge in Miami Beach, Florida. On the ground, the airplane struck a minivan occupied by a woman and two small children who were not seriously injured. The collision caused the airplane to flip and catch fire. The pilot’s two adult relatives were able to escape the burning airplane with serious injuries. Sadly, 36 year old pilot and Miami International Airport tower controller Narciso Torres died in the accident. The flight departed North Perry Airport in Hollywood, Florida, around 12.:38 p.m., crossed the shoreline, and then flew south along the coast destined for Key West. It appears the pilot reported an engine problem to Miami’s Terminal Radar Approach Control facility shortly after flying along the coast.
